Update #101: updates
Hello and here's hoping that winter is treating everyone kindly!
Well, I'm on the final stretch of The Global Citizen Project with just four more projects to go. Thank you for all of your support along the way - I really appreciate it. For the sake of streamlining social media efforts (and since I usually link to my blog anyway from this Kickstarter page), please go to my blog, http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com for all updates, photos, media mentions, etc.
Thanks again for your support of TGCP!
Update #100: february project preview: globe aware in costa rica
Wow. I cannot believe that I've already completed eight volunteer projects. I just returned from volunteering in Guatemala at AWARE Animal Rescue (a blog post coming ASAP) where I managed to fall hard and fast in love with a 5-month old puppy, which I adopted and named Manita ("Little Sister" in Spanish slang).
Next month, I'll head to Costa Rica to volunteer with Globe Aware with the grant I won via Travelocity's Travel for Good Program. Read more about what I'll be doing here:
http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com/2011/01/february-project-preview-globe-aware-in.html
Thank you again for helping to make this year of service happen. It's been more challenging than I ever imagined at times, but humbling, inspiring and fulfilling in more ways than I can even begin to articulate. I am grateful every day for this experience and opportunity and could not have done it without you. So thank you.
Update #99: January Project Preview | Animal Aware | Near Sumpango Sacatepéquez, Guatemala
Hello and happy holidays all! I hope the final few days of 2010 are festive and kind to everyone. I've been scrambling to find a replacement project for January since I had to postpone Haiti (again) due to the current election and resulting political unrest. I had hoped to find a project in Dominican Republic that would somehow aid Haiti, but after repeated attempts to reach out to several organizations without response, I've resigned myself to hoping that I can still work with EcoWorks International in Haiti in May.
In the meantime, an opportunity to volunteer with one of my favorite writer gals in Guatemala next month fell into my lap. Read about Animal Aware and the volunteer work in my latest The Global Citizen Project blog post here:
http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com/2010/12/january-project-preview-animal-aware.html
Update #98: Maybe Third Time Will Be The Charm: Why I Put Haiti On Hold
New post on The Global Citzen Project! Read it here: http://bit.ly/hlOdZk
Thank you all again for making this year (and the next five months) the absolute best.

Update #97: First week of volunteering at Food Lifeline...
Hello everyone and early wishes for happy holidays! I just finished up my first week of volunteering with Food Lifeline in Shoreline (north of Seattle) and posted a quick recap.
Here's the link for your reading pleasure: http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com/2010/12/first-week-of-volunteering-at-food.html
I hope everyone has an amazing holiday season and here's wishing for the very best new year. I feel very fortunate to be in the throes of this project, so thank you for helping to make it happen. You all are the best. xx

Update #95: women who rock. in other words, the we do good awards in new york city.
I am thankful for so, so, so much this year -- for all of you helped make The Global Citizen Project happen, and for those of you who voted and helped me win Travelocity's Travel for Good Award.
Morgan and I were in NYC last week so I could receive the award. Here's a quick recap of our 48-hours in the Big Apple:

Update #94: december project preview: food lifeline in shoreline, wa
Read all about it in the latest post on The Global Citizen Project: http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com/2010/11/december-project-preview-food-lifeline.html
Also, expect a full post-event report after I go to New York City next Monday - Wednesday to receive my WE Do Good Award and Travelocity Travel for Good grant. I'm so humbled by this honor and excited for the (sure to be) feel good festivities. In the meantime, I'm trying to plan the perfect ensemble. I pretty much cleared out, consigned or sold all of my designer A-Team clothing to help fund TGCP, and I'm guessing my third world duds aren't quite red-carpet worthy. I am grateful for so many things, but right about now, Target tops the list.
Thank you all again for this opportunity. It's been amazing and I'm certain, will only continue to get better. xx
Update #93: november project preview: fuck cancer | vancouver bc | canada

Yay Pfeuffer! Glad to hear you won, as you absolutely deserve it!
Better touch up your makeup techniques for your We TV spot. I'm sure that makeup was not high on the priority list during your various travels!
Give me notice as to when I can get the Ladies Home Journal feature.
You are a star (yet, I always thought so).

Update #92: New blog post on TGCP: Quinta Das Abelhas: More Small Farms Means More Locally Produced Food, Which Makes the Planet Happy
Hello everyone!
I hope that October is treating you kindly. I just returned from Project #5 of TGCP near Tabua, Portugal (still reeling from jet lag, actually).
There, I was volunteering on a small, self-sufficient farm in a village of 400 people. You can read more about it here:
http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com/2010/10/quinta-das-abelhas-more-small-farms.html
I loved this project, learning about renewable energy sources, how to farm organically and how to live completely off the grid, while making as little impact as possible on the earth.
Unfortunately, I was not able to purchase and mail postcards while I was there. Upon touchdown in Lisbon, I hopped on a three hour train in a transcontinental red-eye daze to San Comba Dao. On the return, I got into Lisbon after post office hours and left well before it opened. So, I'm going to go through my pictures, print some up and make homemade postcards to send via Seattle. I hope that it isn't a problem -- it was either this or miss a day of volunteering and pay for an extra night of accommodation in Lisbon to track down and mail postcards.
Thank you again for helping to make TGCP happen. I cannot even believe it'salready almost halfway through.
xx
Update #91: October Project Preview: Quinta das Abelhas in Tábua, Coimbra, Portugal
Where: Tábua is located in central Portugal; it’s essentially a rural region of breeding cattle and producing corn, wine, chestnuts, cork and olive oil.
What: Work varies with the seasons but usually includes digging, weeding, planting and watering in the gardens, harvesting and preserving, mucking out the animals, building work, general maintenance and keeping the place tidy, household chores and childcare.
Significance: Quinta das Abelhas is part of World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF). WWOOF is a network where in return for volunteer help, WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles.
This project coincides with harvest, and as an avid foodie, home chef and Slow Food member, I take great interest in learning about food sources and eating locally and seasonally whenever possible.
Update #90: Photos from TGCP Project #4: Sumak Kawsay Yachay in Salasaca, Ecuador
The Global Citizen Project is officially one-third complete and my latest project in Salasaca, Ecudaor was hands down the best one yet. Check out my photos from my volunteer project with Sumak Kawsay Yachay and Kaititawa Escuela here:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php...
P.S. Thank you all for making this amazing project happen. I am grateful every day that I get to experience this. xx
Update #89: September project preview: Sumak Kawsay Yachay in Salasaca, Ecuador
Read all about September has in store for The Global Citizen Project here:
http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com/2010/08/september-project-preview-sumak-kawsay.html
Head's up: postcards from Mexico went out on Saturday morning. Since the area I was volunteering in was very remote and rural, I had to send Puerto Vallarta postcards. Playa Las Tortugas (a.k.a. Turtle Camp) was actually a two hour bus ride north of PV, then a precarious one hour drive to the coast just north of Ixtapa. It was a very pretty 10-mile stretch of coast, but not exactly a big enough village to warrant its own postcards.
While I have everyone here: BIG THANK YOUS for being a part of this incredible adventure. It would not have happened without all of your kindness and support and I thank you all every single day I get to volunteer.
Lastly, I haven't been updating Kickstarter nearly as much as my blog. If you want to follow along, be sure to check out here: http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com/ or follow on Twitter at @global_gourmet. I don't want to flood your inboxes with updates.
That's all for now. Here's hoping everyone has a fantastic week!

Update #88: TIME TO VOTE for Travel For Good Award Category of WE tv’s WE Do Good Awards Contest
My apologies for the en masse APB, but conducting a surgical social media strike from Peru while volunteering isn't the easiest of tasks and I need two minutes of your time (and your vote!).
Peru may be my volunteering home right now for project #2 of The Global Citizen Project, but my shouts of excitement when I learned that I’m one of five finalists in the Travel For Good Award Category of WE tv’s WE Do Good Awards Contest, in partnership with Ladies Home Journal were probably heard around the globe.
From August 1 through August 31, 2010 my nomination will be posted on WE Tv's website and the public can vote on the most deserving Finalist in each of the three Categories.
Here’s what's at stake:
The winner in each category will be notified on or about September 7, 2010. If I am voted the winner, a guest and I will travel to New York City for three days and two nights for the WE Do Good Awards Gala in November 2010. I will also receive a $5,000 Voluntourism Grant from Travelocity’s Travel for Good® Program and will be featured in a future issue of Ladies' Home Journal magazine and on WEVolunteer.TV. (You can see why I want to win so badly, right?!)
PLEASE VOTE HERE: http://www.wetv.com/wedogood/nominee.php... and if you feel so inclined, please pass along the link via your Facebook networks, Twitter, blogs, and whatever other all points bulletin methods you prefer. One million thanks in advance.

DINNER FOR TWO AT CACHAGUA GENERAL STORE (Carmel Valley, CA) Cachagua General Store is hands down my favorite restaurant/dining experience on the Monterey Peninsula. Open for dinner on Monday nights only, there a million reasons why I love Chef/owner Michael Jones, but his culinary rockstar skills and kick ass friendship top the list. (Our recent foodie tour de force of Seattle was an afternoon for the records.) It also doesn’t hurt that he put this super delish salad on the menu: Charyn’s Roast Baby Beet Salad with Coconut Chevre and Balsamic Reduction. Mmm…Michael has already pledged The Global Citizen Project and rallied several other donations from Carmel Valley and Philadelphia folks and also decided to offer dinner for two. He’s one heckuva cheerleader and I’m glad he’s on my team. If you know about Cachagua General Store, I know you love it, and if you don’t, I’d love to use this opportunity to turn you onto one of the best dining experiences you will ever have. Getting there is an adventure, but the reasonably priced wine list and menu that spans everything from Fresh Sardine Bocadillo with Mojito Mayonaisa and Mesquite Grilled DuRoc Farms Baby Back Pork Ribs to Micah’s Pizza with Crème Fraiche, Corralitos Ham, Carmelized Onions, Fresh Basil, Fresh and Domestic Mushrooms and Niman Ranch Lamb Chops with Mint Molé, as well as friendliest dining vibe you’ll ever find will make you an instant believer. With more than twelve years’ editorial experience, Charyn Pfeufer is a well-respected veteran in the publishing industry. From food, wine and travel editor to copywriter, marketing consultant to author and ghostwriter, her successful career has involved her in all aspects of crafting the perfect editorial. She's authored, co-authored and ghostwritten more than a dozen books and contributed to more than 100 publications, including TravelChannel.com, Destination Weddings & Honeymoons, Sunset, San Francisco Chronicle, Fodor's, National Geographic Traveler, Islands, DailyCandy.com, SPA, Seattle Weekly and Seattle Times.
In addition to her extensive editorial experience, she handles public relations, marketing and social media for several contracts throughout the west coast. She received extensive SEO training from AOL, wrote several guidebooks for Fodor’s, and is well-connected within the WA State tourism industry (and beyond) and the worldwide travel writer/blogger community. She's been part of many media startup ventures, so she's experienced her fair share of growing pains and seen what does and doesn’t work in print and online publishing and marketing environments.
As a testament to her ability to think big and make things happen, in June 2010, Pfeuffer launched The Global Citizen Project, a 12 community project, 12 country, 12 month volunteer tour de force. The year-long humanitarian project was covered by more than 50 media outlets (and counting) and chronicled since its inception on her blog (http://globalcitizenproject.blogspot.com). The Global Citizen Project was funded via Kickstarter.com and proof of the power of social media: More than 200 people pledged more than $20,000 in 90 days; nearly half of them were strangers.
Pfeuffer's volunteer work earned her the prestigious honor of a $5,000 Voluntourism Grant from Travelocity’s Travel for Good® Program in WE TV’s First Annual WE Do Good Awards Contest, in partnership with Ladies’ Home Journal. She's also Wyndham Worldwide’s Women on Their Way Voluntourism expert and writes a monthly column for its website. Locally, she volunteer with United Way of King County, Food Lifeline and Marra Giving Garden. She lives in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle with her partner and their two rescue dogs.
