Allow me to propose a toast, to funny poems and amazing art! Step right in to learn all about baddie bags and boobie trees!
Last Day on Kickstarter. :-(
Wish we hit our goal, but we sure did make lots of new fans and friends, and appreciate all of the support.
Looks like we will put this book out not on our own as planned, but with the help of another publisher. Please visit www.ChocolateChipsAndRocketShips.com for updates, and to continue seeing a new poem and picture every day!
And now, here's the last Poem of the Day for Kickstarter. I don't have a Fourth of July poem, so how about a nice Thanksgiving poem instead.

Poem of the Day 6/17/12 - Day 14 of 100
Oklahoma, illustrated by Starr Hardridge
This is a special Fathers Day pick today. Most of the artists involved with the project are from all over the world, and I have only met via email. But Starr is a friend who lives nearby, and this painting is of his son Cole, a friend of my son Bonham. The piece also comes from Starr's own childhood growing up in Oklahoma, surfing not on Mom's car but in horse troughs. Bonus points if you recognized the Oklahoma state bird, the scissor-tailed fly catcher! Thanks Starr for the wonderful painting, and Happy Fathers Day to Starr, and all the other dads out there!
One more personal note today: Happy First Birthday to my sweet, beautiful and wonderful daughter, Redding Isis!

A Pirate's Job Interview, illustrated by Shawn McManus
One of my favorites! Shawn is a legend in the comics world, and has done art for Sandman, Fables, Batman, Spiderman, and many more over the past 25+ years. In addition, he is a really great guy who has been a huge supporter of this project from early on. Believe it or not, Shawn submitted to me the great piece you see below only two days after I first contacted him out of the blue!

FAQ
-
As of June 4th, there are 57 artists 100% on board this project. About 20 have handed in final art, and most of the rest will have their art done and ready to go by July 15th or earlier. So we still need to lock down the final 43 artists. So, Charles Vess, James Jean, Bill Watterson, Gary Larson, Alan Lee, P. Craig Russell, Stanley Mouse, Dennis Loren, William Joyce, Kevin O'Neill, Jill Thompson, Dave McKean, Mark Buckingham, if any of you are reading this, please get in touch, I've been saving a great poem for you!
-
Each artist is guaranteed $100, and an equal share in 50% of all profits from the book.
-
Printing a nice book, it adds up quickly. $10,000 for the artists, $21,000 to print the 220+ page hardcover book, $9,000 for the book design, video, website. $3,200 for Kickstarter fees.
I'm not great at math, that's not more than $40,000, is it? Oh drats. Is it too late to ask for more?
-
$40,000 is really the bare minimum we need. If we raise more, the artists get more than just $100, and they sure deserve it. If we raise more, we will be able to do more cool surprises like animation all down the line. And if we raise more, we also will make the rewards even better.
Plus I will finally be able to pay the late bills I have been dodging in favor of putting all my money into this book upfront! :-)
-
Mostly to make my wife Ashley and son Bonham laugh. Baby Redding laughs at me enough already. Many of these poems are based on stuff Bonham does, stuff he loves, or stuff he says.
We love to read, Shel Silverstein is of course a favorite, but beyond that, I've never read much poetry, and until 9 months ago had never even written a poem that I can remember. Somehow I got into a big poetry writing groove last Halloween, which lasted til about Christmas. Still not quite sure where all these goofy poems came from, but here they are, and I hope ya like em!

Just for fun. I used to love reading Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side every day, I'm hoping this will become a fun thing that folks look forward to as well. I hope lots of people out there will enjoy reading a new poem and seeing a new great illustration every day, for 100 days. The more folks read these, the more fans we make, the more folks will buy the hardcover book too, at least we hope!
-
Nothing beats a book! Especially when these illustrations are so beautiful, this collection is going to be something you want to have on the shelves, and be able to read to your kids at bedtime, or just browse through to see the work of so many great artists. Plus, if nobody buys the book, we won't have enough money to keep commissioning art, and make this project really happen. If you love the poems, but just can't afford $25, you can still help us by spreading the word - forward emails, Facebook, tweet and tell your friends. Any support we get, we sure do appreciate!
-
I hope all ages. What age group are Shel Silverstein, or Roald Dahl's books for? You can read the poems to a three year old. An eight year old is going to love the booger and poop jokes. And immature adults like myself can still enjoy the poems too, as well as all the great art.
