A photographic journey to capture how the national parks are being affected by budget cuts and show why the parks are worth protecting.
I’m Chris Mabey, a photographer based in Utah and I am setting out on a photography project to show how budget cuts are affecting the national parks and why the national parks are worth protecting.
Why this is important?
The national parks are an incredible resource for our country. They conserve historic and beautiful places and they bring in roughly $10 in economic activity for every dollar invested. In today’s dollars the park budget has fallen by nearly 15% in the last decade and the parks are now facing an additional $110 million in budget cuts.
Currently over 1/3 of the trails in the park system are in poor or seriously deficient condition and 90% of the roads are in fair or poor condition.
These new cuts will force the parks to have fewer employees and many visitors centers will have shortened hours or will be closed all together. A visitor’s center I just went to last summer in Grand Teton national park will be closed under these new cuts.
There has been a lot of talk of how these cuts will affect the national parks, but I want to show the world how the parks are affected and I need your help to do it. I believe that pictures of how the national parks are hurting under these budget cuts will be much more powerful than the articles written about them.
How the project will be successful?
To accomplish this I will visit 10 national parks and capture how they are affected by budget cuts. I have already started researching ways to show how the parks are affected, I have been pouring over data to find places in the parks that have been affected by cuts. I will also capture the very best of our national parks, the wildlife and scenery to show why our national parks are worth preserving for future generations. Everyday during the project I will be up before dawn and stay out until dark to make sure I capture the images needed to tell the story of the condition of the national parks.
Please help me tell this story. If you back this project you will get beautiful postcards and prints of the national park. As you display these prints you can show that you value our best idea. Please donate if you can and please share this with your friends so this story can be shared with the world.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There are two challenges that could arise during the completion of the project. They are weather problems and mechanical issues. I will be prepared for every weather condition I can and I am committed to shooting in any condition so I can get the best images possible. As for mechanical and equipment failures, I do the best I can to keep my equipment in the best working condition possible. I will have backup equipment where I can and if there are major equipment failures I can get rental equipment to replace it within two days.
After the completion of the project the delays that could happen would be in post processing images and writing the e-book. I want to make the results from this project the best they can be and I will not deliver the final project until I believe it is the best I can deliver. Any delays should be very small and I am committed to delivering the rewards as soon as possible.
You will get to choose what print you get from the project. I want it to be something you will be proud to have on your wall. There will be plenty of beautiful shots of scenery and wildlife to choose from, but if you want a print of how the parks are being affected by budget cuts you can pick that too.
I will be posting them on my blog, Facebook and instagram. In order to have the photos make a larger impact I will be working to get the images to conservation groups and possibly political groups so these pictures will have a real impact.
