A game in which the goal is to defeat various cancers in a fantasy setting. The game will use solo & team based play in a PvE setting.
We pledge to give 5% of the profits back to the Kickstarter community. More information on http://kickingitforward.org/
Since some people were interested in the early prototype work here is a short video. This is based on the original Torque Game Engine before we switched to Hero Cloud.
THE VISION OF ONCOLOS
Games have the power to educate, to shape our future behavior, and in some cases to heal...
Oncolos is a multi-player fantasy game in which you assume a heroic role and battle an invading scourge bent on the corruption and destruction of the game world.
This game serves as an entertainment, educational, and healing vehicle. It provides a fun challenge while instructing the player in the elements of modern cancer treatment. Oncolos provides a venue for the visualization and confrontation of cancer so you, the player, can take back your power to heal.
- · Players: Ages 7 to adult
- · Game Type: 3D Fantasy Based Role Play Game
- · Game Style: Player vs. Environment (PvE) cooperative only
- · Game Funding: Free to Play (F2P) with online store for in-game assistance and vanity items to provide revenue (see below)
- · Four “races” with different innate abilities
- · Traditional RPG roles – mage, warrior, healer
- · Large open 3D world
- · Instance dungeons
The game will be strictly Player vs. Environment (PvE). There will be no dueling or player vs. player (PvP) modes. The four races will operate exclusively in a cooperative mode. However, some of the more powerful "spells" wielded in the game can have detrimental effects on the other races so elements of strategy will be required in their use. In game checks will not permit players to use these effects to "grief" the system.
In the game world the player will confront a series of different "monsters" which act as stylized representations of viruses, bacteria, and, of course, cancer cells.
The playing area will comprise the interior of various parts of the body. Like the character races and the monsters they fight, all the elements will be stylized to reduce the direct connection to the actual human body.
The choice of race names, monster names, and locations are all intended to help the young player visualize the confrontation and defeat of cancer cells in the body. Older players should also be able to play the game without the indirect references getting in the way of their enjoyment of the game.
A major part of the game is the ability of family and friends to participate in the healing process in an active way. By allowing parents, friends, and even medical personnel to play with the cancer patient, a bond of caring can be established at a time when the patient is often feeling the most alone and vulnerable.
Recent medical research indicates people who successfully visualize fighting cancer have a better prognosis than those who do not, whether they are unable to visualize, do not know how, or are unwilling to do so. This game is intended to provide a vehicle for that visualization, to educate the player, and to provide a team atmosphere where friends, family, and even helpful outsiders can combine to defeat the various challenges provided by the game. This activity may help increase the cancer patient's skills and determination to overcome the disease and more comfortably deal with the symptoms in the real world.
WHAT WILL BE MADE
This is the first of two Kickstarter projects I foresee to make the complete game.
The main goal of this Kickstarter is to produce a playable limited game with all the major character races, one large territory, and one instance dungeon completed. Spells, crafts, quests, NPC's and monsters will all be present. It will be fully playable, from character creation to defeat of a major boss. The game will be made available to the public as soon as it is completed so others may participate and provide feedback and suggest improvements for future upgrades.
The game store will also be live so that the project can begin to fund itself to reduce the amount needed to expand the project.
A secondary goal is to create all the fundamental documents that would allow a larger team to develop a more extensive title. These documents will be offered online for public comment and improvement.
A second Kickstarter is envisioned to expand the limited version of the game into a fully realized game world, covering more game areas, types of cancer, and more treatments. To do so will require additional artists, coders, testers, and support people. I would also like to take the game out into other languages besides English to allow cancer victims from other parts of the world to participate.
The general plan is to expand the game as a series of new challenges - adding updates in the form of new zones with different cancers to be fought and overcome, as well as additional instance areas where players can learn new skills to defeat their enemies.
Of course any money gained in excess of the starter amount will be used to fund expansion of the game and lower the amount sought in the second Kickstarter program.
WHY I SHOULD BE THE ONE WHO MAKES THIS GAME
In 2011 my wife's diagnosis was downgraded to stage 4 - terminal cancer. She has been fighting cancer since 2010, when it was first discovered, undergoing a variety of chemotherapy, radiation, and dietary therapies. She is a role play gamer and this is my chance to directly help her in her fight and give her family and friends a chance to help as well.
I have years of experience in designing, programming, and making games, including large games. I have a drive to make this game which no ordinary salaried individual could equal, and I want to make it right.
I really want this project to succeed. And if you are taking the time to Tweet about it to everybody you know that is great. BUT, please do not spam people you don't know. As much as I want to get the word out, it is a violation of the Kickstarter rules to spam. It makes Kickstarter look bad and it is not cool.
The short answer - The initial game will be developed on Windows, so that one is a given but....
The longer response: The Hero Cloud engine currently has support for a standalone client, web browsers, and Facebook, and is promising support for Mac, Linux, and iOS. A lot will depend on what they can deliver, when they deliver it, and what our testing reveals about the different delivery models. I would like to support as many platforms as possible, and probably will support more in the second phase of the project, but not at the expense of the promise to deliver a quality product on time.
There will initially be four primary character races. The two indigenous races will be the Leukos (leukocytes - white blood cells) and the Erythros (erythrocytes - red blood cells). The two assisting races will be the Chems (chemotherapy) and the Radia (Radiation). Each race will have some natural abilities which will allow them to either specialize or compliment their occupation.
Initially there will be three races of bad guys. The Bacs (bacteria) not all of whom are bad. Virii (viruses) who are small, fast, and dangerous. And finally Canc(cancers) who are rogue traitors to the system.
Well since cancers are basically cells gone rogue you can pretty much assume its going to be a game with a lot of action and if you follow the quests a lot of intrigue. A lot of betrayal and destruction. Traitors seeking power, and corrupted individuals serving only their own ends, instead of looking out for the good of all.
