LET’S PRETEND WE’RE BUNNY RABBITS is the second feature film from Chris Diani, the director, co-writer, and co-producer of the award-winning gay zombie comedy Creatures from the Pink Lagoon.
WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?
After a disagreement about money, struggling young playwright Gerry breaks up with his equally penniless artist boyfriend Tom and sets out to find a sugar daddy to support him. He quickly finds one on a matchmaking website, but doesn’t realize the sugar daddy is a furry – and thinks Gerry is a furry as well.
WHAT ELSE HAPPENS?
The plot thickens when Tom chases after Gerry with the help of his best friend, a headstrong lesbian new-age author. When they arrive at the beachfront hotel where Gerry is meeting his sugar daddy, they realize it’s host to both a massive furry convention and a meet-up of jittery lightning strike survivors. Fursuits are donned, identities are mistaken, and hilarious complications ensue.
WAIT, WHAT'S A FURRY?
A furry is someone who belongs to the furry fandom, a group that enjoys anthropomorphic animal characters in art, literature, and pop culture.
Many furries live what’s called a furry lifestyle, dressing as their favorite characters or creating their own “fursonas.” You can read more about furries and the furry fandom here.
HOW DOES IT END?
We don’t want to spoil it, but we’ll say this: Let’s Pretend We’re Bunny Rabbits ends like all great romantic comedies should, with a wedding between a bunny and a bear.
WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT AN INDEPENDENT GAY FILM?
As much as it seems like gays are everywhere these days, visibility doesn’t necessarily equal genuine representation. Sure, Milk and Brokeback Mountain were great, but there's a lot more to gay life than the one mainstream film that makes it to the multiplex every few years. And for every well-rounded gay character featured in a Hollywood movie, there are dozens of sassy stereotypes and mincing queens slapped on the screen as props or punchlines. Meanwhile, there's a huge LGBT audience out there, eager to see their stories told, from their perspective.
That's where independent gay films come in. Removed from the pressures of million-dollar budgets and opening weekend grosses, we can focus on telling unique, personal stories about the queer experience.
THAT SOUNDS KIND OF GRIM.
We know, right? But not all gay indies are painful coming-of-age dramas (not that there's anything wrong with that). Like he did with the horror genre in Creatures from the Pink Lagoon, Chris Diani is determined to put a fresh – and funny – spin on classic screwball comedies with Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits. And there'll be a furry dance number! That's worth the price of admission alone!

Chris Diani is an independent filmmaker based in Seattle, WA. His first feature film, the gay zombie comedy CREATURES FROM THE PINK LAGOON, has screened in over 30 cities around the world and was honored with the Queer Horror Award for best film of 2006. He has been commissioned to create films for Seattle Pride and Gay City and was featured on Karl Krogstad’s television show THE AMERICAN AVANT GARDE.
