About this project
Mugwumpin's "Occurrences" are a series of public performances conceived and created for non-theatrical spaces. These Occurrences take place out in the world, with the intention of reshaping boundaries of performative space, challenging performer/audience relationships, and bringing a bit of transformative magic into the world. The series is off to a popping start, with two Occurrences already created and performed: a gothic streetside confessional, and a post-disaster voyeurism spectacle in an SF motel.
Since 2004, Mugwumpin has been making provocative, visually bewitching performance in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. We create collaboratively through play, using artifice, accidents, and an empathic mindset to mine unexpected truths. This playful collaboration extends to our audiences as well. In non-theatrical spaces—city streets, motel rooms, shopping mall escalators, rooftops—we can discover along with our audiences how to engender a state of play in our everyday surroundings. We believe strongly that Occurrences should be free to the audiences who happen to experience them (as they have been so far).
Sadly, the fact that Occurrences are free for the audience does not make them free for us to make. We are basing our Kickstarter fundraising efforts on the beliefs that drive us—forming direct connections with the people we create work for.
Any money you offer will go toward paying performers and staff for each Occurrence, as well as purchasing minimal supplies (we are on a strict budget here!).
We invite you to be a part of injecting performative art directly into the bloodstream of San Francisco by supporting our Occurrences series. And of course, we invite you to attend our performances, which will be scheduled at two- to three-month intervals throughout the coming years.

You'll receive all of the above, plus Mugwumpin will perform an already-existing Occurrence for you, in a location of your choosing (unfortunately, we cannot cover long-distance travel costs).
