Two young farmers building a community partnership to bring a diversity of local fruits and vegetables and promote small-scale sustainable agriculture
It all started with an ad in the local paper: "Young farmers seeking land." Three months later, our vision of a new model for land sharing is coming to fruition. Here’s what we’re working with: two-thirds of an acre of flat clay soil; an 8’ x 10’ craigslist greenhouse; three small backyard plots; a handful of tools; a big box of seeds; a long list of interested neighbors; and lots of ideas and energy.
While western Sonoma County has more CSAs than you can count on a broadfork, the Sonoma Valley to the east has approximately zero CSAs. But what is a CSA you might ask? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, a model that allows people to share in a farm’s bounty and interact directly with their farmers, creating a consistent local market.
With a little ingenuity and a lot of community support we are trying to create a community agricultural space that will bring fresh produce and flowers to the valley and allow us to be the full-time farmers we want to be. One of our additional goals is to create subsidized CSA shares for low-income families.
Our farm is truly a community effort. We are using our land through a crop sharing agreement with a Sonoma resident. We are growing tomatoes and onions donated from one local farm, and potatoes from another. We are watering with irrigation supplies sourced through cooperative bulk purchasing with other local farmers. Our friends are even coming out to help in the field.
Even with all of this support, we have major start-up costs and we need your help to get going!
So what can you do? A little bit goes a long way--$10 will buy us a few packs of seeds and $50 will buy a half roll of drip tape. For $650, we can get 20 yards of compost or a used rototiller. Can't afford to give? You can "Like" us on Facebook, send emails to your friends, and talk about us and our model for farming with everyone you know!
Thank you to all, and stay tuned for our new website due out at the end of this week.
