Playwright Robert Kelly
Director Crichton Atkinson
WHAT IS IT? 'Oedipus after Colonus' is a new work by the extraordinary poet Robert Kelly, directed by Crichton Atkinson with an all-star cast. Electronic musician Brenda Hutchinson brings an intelligent and probing score to the Off Broadway play lit almost entirely by the film projections of Los Angeles artists Andrew Lush and Richard Gartrell.
(Synopsis of ‘Oedipus after Colonus’) The death of Oedipus:
Robert Kelly’s world premiere play ‘Oedipus after Colonus’ creates a psychological realm inside the instant Oedipus disappears at the end of 'Oedipus at Colonus' by Sophocles. Outside of time and specific place, one enters the mind of a dying man. He is watching his family for the last time before continuing on out of myth. In this mental location Antigone and Ismene, the daughters of Oedipus, extract facts about their father’s death from the messenger who told them of his vanishing. Having nothing more to say than what the daughters had seen themselves, the boy becomes a tool for their desires as they fabricate solutions and role-play. These games and aggressions acted out by the daughters are futile attempts to mend a loss within themselves. The hatred, admiration, sensuality, and purpose defined by their relationship to their father, have disappeared into thin air with his body and left them desperate. ‘Oedipus after Colonus’ is a family drama that takes place inside the mental landscape of a dying man, this play walks you through Oedipus' last consciousness before he slipped away completely into death.

HOW IS IT HAPPENING -Your donation will help pay the actors, the director, the musician, the costume designer and the cinematographer. -We have already been awarded $1,650 in government funding from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. We have also received $2,000 in private grants to the playwright. These two sources total $3,650, which is awesome but the show is going to cost $10,000 to produce. WE CAN'T MAKE IT WORK WITHOUT YOUR HELP! Please open your generous arms and help us create inspired new theater. You will get a great gift in return for producing this fresh, authentic work. -Additional support is provided by HERE, the Byrdcliffe, and Materials for the Arts a recycling program that supplies donated materials to artists.
