About this project

STEP SPIES is a tongue in cheek action comedy pilot for a TV and Online series.  The series follows the antics of Jake and Morgan, step-brothers who bicker their way through intrigue and danger as they search for their father, an infamous spy who has gone rogue.   

We are raising money on Kickstarter because it allows us to do something unusual with this project independently of the big TV companies.  Ultimately, if the project becomes very popular, it will find it's place on a TV channel.  Filmmakers, competing against shows fueled by giant marketing campaigns, must find an innovative approach to expose their work.  

When we set out to do a promo for the live action series we decided to shoot using action figures for the fun of it.  After we showed it to friends and co-workers we found they liked the action figures so much they wanted us to produce that version as well.   So, we decided to do both. 

Our plan is to shoot 2 VERSIONS;  one with actors for TV and one with action figures for promotional purposes.  Hopefully, they will both find fans and create an interesting new idea that cross promotes each other. 

In the live action version, the story takes the step brothers all over the world.  Traditionally this is problem for a half hour series production that usually focuses on one central location.   To get around this we will shoot our actors on green screen and composite them with footage from a number of sources, including stock footage, music videos, and movies we can license.    In other words, it will be the first (we think) video mash-up pilot.

We are aware that the project is ambitious!!  We are shooting 2 pilots and our desire is to compensate everyone who works with us, even if the compensation is a fraction of their normal fee.   It makes for a happier crew and allows us to complete our goals on time.  

UNDERSTANDING COSTS

The action figure shoot, in theory, could be done for very little, except that we must clear copyright issues.  That means, we must have our own action figures created. We must license music and background images we use for the sets. The miniature sets, themselves, will have some construction costs.  

The live action shoot has all the costs of a typical film production...actors, crew, equipment etc.  Additionally, we need to shoot on a small green screen stage and license footage for the back grounds.
