Four musicians coming together to release an authentic, emotional, and lyrically sound album to inspire and touch listeners.
So you've stumbled across our kickstarter page. Maybe you're a family member, a co-worker, a friend, a friend of a friend, or maybe you're a stranger. Whoever you are, whether you've known us for years or only seen our faces on the internet, you're probably wondering the same thing. "Why should I give my money to you? Why are you so different from everyone else? What makes you so special and so deserving of $10,000.00? Why should I support you? What are you going to bring to the world that isn't already there? Who are you?"
In fact, the people closest to us are probably the most skeptical. You've seen us grow and develop our passion as musicians. You've seen us try and fail. And try and fail. And try. And fail. Join this band and that band. Record at this studio and then another. For five years, ten years, 20 years, maybe you've known us our whole lives. You've seen us chase dreams that didn't happen, spend money that seems to have gone to waste, and maybe you've seen us get excited, maybe you've gotten excited only to face the bitter disappointment when we fail. Again. But we always get back up, we never give up. We just keep going and you're wondering if you can handle feeling that disappointment again.
And with that lead up, you probably think we've figured out the perfect thing to say. That you're about to read a reason that will blow away all reasons. That will have you in tears and reaching for your credit card ready to pledge as much as you can.
We've thought about "pulling the guilt card" and writing a story that we hope will make you feel like a horrible person if you don't contribute, but this is not a sob story. This is a story of triumph, of perseverance, of timing, of creation, of four people trying to put their stamp into an industry full of insiders. All we can do is tell you the beginning of our story - honestly, simply - and hope that you'll want to write the ending. That you'll believe the world will benefit from hearing what we have to say.
The four members of our band together are the perfect combination of youth and experience to create a product that sounds like the music of today without losing it's authenticity. We think this type of music is missing from today's industry. When recording was all tape, you couldn't fake being a musician. There was no autotune, no advanced compression, no drum loops, no sound or tool available that make you sound like something you were not. If you hit a wrong note, you did the whole song again. If you just weren't that great of a singer, well, you didn't make it. Lyrics were more important. There was no electronic dance beat to distract. Your lyrics had to mean something because people were going to pay attention to what you were saying. The days of going into a studio and recording over and over until you got it perfect are gone. Technology has made the music process so easy.
Before you start thinking we're all 'old farts' longing for the past and bashing technology, let us stop you. Having a young singer who when we reference a song asks "what year did that come out?" and who is forever concerned about sounding current, keeps us in check. In fact, she may be the only thing keeping us from going complete 90s cover band on you! :P. In all seriousness, 30 is hardly old -- just old enough to remember 'the way things were' but still young enough to appreciate and embrace the positive changes technology has made to the industry and how it has opened the recording process up to people like us, who don't have tens of thousands of dollars to pour into studio time.
Now our lead singer can do three takes of her lead, and basically 'cut and paste' to create a perfect track. If there are a few stray notes, no need to start over, just throw a little pitch correction on it. If our bass or guitar player makes a mistake, steal the right note from somewhere else in the song or choose from another take. If our drummer goes off beat, choose a perfect section and loop it through the rest of the song. If a song needs strings or a pad to fill it out, no need to hire an orchestra, just plug in a keyboard, write a midi part and choose from hundreds of sounds. Technology saves time, which saves money, which makes people like us able to afford a good quality record.
So what are we complaining about? Technology seems great! Well, it's positive may be it's greatest weakness. The ability to create "perfect" music on a low budget has made the industry open to anyone. You don't have to sing, just T-pain your voice. If you can't play any instruments; use loops, arps, or hire session musicians. If you're not good at making up backing vocals, plug in a harmonizer and let it do it for you. Music slowly becomes less about authenticity and talent and more about who can make the coolest sounds with their computer. No one cares what you're saying as long as it sounds good blasting through speakers at a club.
Cookie-cutter songs come out of this "pop machine." If you're beautiful and have a magnetic personality, technology can fix the rest. But the downside is that every song sounds the same. Yes, it sounds good, but it has no soul, nothing that makes it unique, nothing that will make it stick years later, nothing that will make the same people who love it now, want to play it at their granddaughter's wedding.
We think the industry is ready for a change. There are a few artists popping up who have a sound that's stripped of all processing ( Adele, The Lumineers, etc.) and the world has embraced them. But it seems to be all or nothing: either super processed or completely stripped. Why can't we have both? Why can't we combine the best of technology with the authenticity of the past? Why not have a song that sounds like today's pop music only with lyrics that mean something and musicians who can recreate the sound live? Today's technology mixed with talent creates an amazing product.
We think our band can be one of the pioneers(because we're not quite conceited enough to believe we're the only ones ;) of a techno/retro sound. We write a song, develop it with live instruments, record it and then produce it using technology to enhance the sound. We want to make a new standard. That music not only has to sound good, but every single piece of it has to be good and meaningful.
Saying that our band creates music that is different from everything else in today's industry is quite a lofty claim. However, we're asking for a lot of money, so we'd better be confident in what we're asking you to support. We are not only confident, but we fully believe that our music will succeed if the public is given an opportunity to hear it the way we envision it. But in order for our music to become accessible to the public, we need money.
Technology has made the process a lot cheaper, but it has by no means eliminated the costs completely. The first thing people ask us when we show them our music is, "why aren't you doing something with this?" We don't blame them for asking. No one knows how a song goes from an idea in your bedroom to a number one hit. Heck, even we don't fully understand. We think if there was one guaranteed path, well, every musician would be famous by now :)
But we do know it takes talent, a little bit of luck, hard work, and unfortunately, money. We have reached a place where we literally cannot invest any more money because we have to eat, pay our bills and support our families! We want to do something with our music, we know what we have is good enough, but we can't do it without your help.
So your next question is probably "what exactly am I paying for? What could possibly be so expensive about releasing an album?" Well, we'll be glad to tell you :)
Our goal is to create a minimum 10 track (but hopefully 15) album of original music that doesn't just sound good, but sounds good enough to compete with the top forty because we want to release it commercially and let it compete with the top forty. In order to do this, you have to come as a complete package. You can't just walk up to a radio station with a demo and hope they'll see your potential. You have to have everything ready: your image, your album, your gear, your social media, your videos.
And this is where the money starts adding up. To complete our album, we need studio time (to record and mix) and mastering. Good studios charge around 75 an hour and good mastering engineers may charge about 200 per track. In order to cut down on studio time, we want to make one time investments into our home studio. We will purchase a few stable pieces of equipment, maybe a good preamp and microphone, so we can spend 30 or 40 hours on our song if we need to without paying for all that time.
This is by far the bulk of our budget but we also need album artwork, logos, promotion/website photos, behind the scenes pictures, performance photos and videos, one video for our lead single, an electronic press kit, a booking agent, band gear (shirts, business cards, posters, flyers, any promotional materials), CD duplication, album packaging, online substrictions fees to sites like itunes, copyright/publishing fees, contract and lawyer fees, the list goes on and on and the price keeps adding up.
When we plotted out our budget, it's amazing how fast $10,000.00 can dwindle away and how ten grand suddenly seems like nothing. But then again, we are trying to accomplish something professional artists spend millions of dollars on with only $10,000.00. That's why although we set a minimum goal, we aim to raise more, whatever you give us will make our product that much better.
And so we're back to the beginning, why should you give your money to us? Hopefully you understand more about us and where your money will go, but we know that's not all it takes. You have to believe us and believe in us. You have to want to be a part of our journey from the beginning. You have to stick your neck out for something that may ultimately fail.
We understand that each donation, even if it's $10.00 dollars, means one more person has put their faith in us. We don't take it lightly. We work every single day, and every backer, every facebook like, every person who gives us a discount adds to the pressure we feel to succeed because ultimately, we don't do this for ourselves. We do it for you! We do it because we think you would benefit, the world would benefit from hearing what we have to say.
That's what music, art is about. Creating something that somehow qualifies a human experience or emotion into something we can relate to and enjoy. So what do you say? Will you help us write the next chapter? Will you let us fly?
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have a vision and a budget for this project, but accomplishing everything will not be easy. $10,000.00 is the minimum we need to complete this project well, and we will have to find people willing to work with us for less than they would normally charge.
Once the project is funded, the real hard work begins. We set a November release date and by that date, we need to have our brand established. We always foresee production delays. Getting a track just right means every detail, down to the second, requires work. Sometimes we finish a song and then hear a sound we missed (maybe a wrong note or a part we turned up is way too loud now) and we have to go back and remix. When we send our CD for mastering, we are trusting they will give us a good turn around time, but the mastering engineers work on their own schedules.
We have to coordinate all our photography and videography with our backer rewards to make sure everyone gets what they are owed. There are always possible production delays involved after a video has been shot.
Once our album is done, we have to send it for duplication and combine all our artwork and logos for the album packet. This turn around time needs to happen before our release date.
Finally, our music has to be legally protected before we release it. We have to meet with an entertainment lawyer to make sure we have a contract in stone between our band members so everyone gets paid what they are owed if the album is successful, and so no one can steal our music. Money is the thing that ends some bands. Once people start seeing dollar signs, it's less about what's mine is yours and more about what's mine is mine. Suddenly, bands fight over who wrote which part of the song and who deserves a higher percentage or a bigger credit. We like to think that we are not so superficial, but that's why you make a contract before you make any money and while everyone is clear-headed. If our band can't agree, our project ends right there.
We guess the ultimate risk is that we'll fail. That we'll get funded, achieve everything on our list, release a video and an album we think is great and it will flop. No one will buy it. No one will even think it's good. The ultimate risk is if we're wrong, if our music is not as good as we thought and everything everyone has done for us goes to waste.
That's really what keeps us up at night and what makes us spend every free second on our project. Every time we gain a new supporter, that just means one more person who will be disappointed if we fail. We understand that by involving the public, we make this bigger than ourselves. If we fail, we aren't just failing Ervin, Will, Chris and Nicole; we fail every single person who gave us support. And well, writing about this makes us nervous, so we'll stop :)
Thank you, we want to acknowledge you! Please send email@example.com a picture of yourself holding a sign(simple, just a piece of paper or white board) that has your name (first name is fine) and your donation amount decorated however you please. In the email include your facebook or twitter handle if you want to be tagged/mentioned in the picture. Also look out for album listening/release party info. All our backers will be invited!
We do not have any music available for download. Our music is still in the production process, and we want to make sure our music is not available for download until the album is complete. We're aiming for commercial release, so we are approaching our music as a commercial release. Nothing is released until it is completely finished and mastered. But we understand you need to hear us to know if you want to back us, so we've put up samples, videos and covers :)
Thanks for being willing to support! The kickstarter website is a national site and they partner with amazon and paypal to make sure everyone's credit/debit card information is safe (so project creators will never have access to anyone's bank accounts).
Backing a kickstarter project is just like buying a product off of amazon.com. They use a site called paypal to link to your card. If you've never purchased anything off of amazon, they will ask you to create an account. Your email address serves as your login and the "password" they ask you for should be a new, unique password you make up for that site. They are NOT asking for the password to your email account or any other personal account. It could be hellokitty88 (lol), whatever you want it to be, just something you will remember if you ever need to use amazon in the future.
It just makes the account secure, so only you will have access to your amazon account in the future. After you make your account, you should be able to choose the amount you donate based on the reward package you want. Minimum pledge is $1.00 and maximum is however generous you feel like being :)
Nice to re-meet you and thanks for following through! We hope you will find our progress intriguing and we look forward to getting our music in your hands!
