Be one of the first supporters to bring Arnold Schoenberg's 1912 melodrama "Pierrot lunaire" into the modern day.
On October 15, the Blackbird Music Project is presenting a multimedia production of Arnold Schoenberg's 1912 cabaret masterpiece "Pierrot lunaire" with the collaboration of new music specialist Julieanne Klein and artist/photographer Jeff LeFever. Two screens will be set up on either side of the performers (an ensemble of 6 musicians + Julieanne) on which a series of images designed by Jeff will be projected during the 21 (3x7, according to Mr. Schoenberg) songs of the cabaret. Jeff's series of images, created through his response to the Pierrot character and to Schoenberg's of him both contributes to our understanding of the narrative of the work, and grounds us through the use of imagery drawn from our daily lives. Learn more about Jeff and Julieanne at www.lefever.com and www.julieanneklein.com
Included on the program will also be Southern California composer Sean Heim's "Jupiter, the moon, and myself..." for soprano and small ensemble. These four songs are based on poetic texts drawn from four different cultures that personify and deify nature. Check Sean out at www.seanheim.com
As part of this project, we're also giving away 150 tickets to local schools, and will be distributing educational materials to local arts teachers and even making some appearances as guest speakers in school classes to introduce Pierrot lunaire and our vision for the piece to students, getting them.
As an added bonus, after this first iteration is complete we'll also have a highly portable production that we will be able to take to nearly any venue interested. Jeff plans on refining the images over time, so that this project will continue to develop in depth and meaning over time along with our own understanding of the piece.
Your funding will help pay for all of the costs associated with this first production including the professional musicians who will be performing this piece (one of the most difficult in the literature) the production of the images (lots of hours editing and lots of hours in the field collecting images) and the development of all of the educational materials that we're giving away.
