Hidden Driveway is a poignant, funny short film about two brothers who await a family meeting. Left in the dark, they wonder what it could be about.
Hidden Driveway is a short film written by award-winning filmmaker Sarah Goodman and award-winning musician/actor/writer Brad Hart. Influenced by films like Noam Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale, and work by Gus Van Sant and Richard Linklater, Hidden Driveway is about two young brothers who try to make sense of family dynamics when they feel left in the dark. Alex, 11, and Chaz, 14 are hanging out in the park when they get a call from Mom to come home for a family meeting. As they walk home, they wonder what the hell it could be about…
It’s a simply constructed, character driven, six minute short that takes place in the time it takes the brothers to get home. It’s a poignant and funny look at the culture that brothers create with each other separate from the world of adults.
WHY MAKE HIDDEN DRIVEWAY?
Sarah and Brad would like to make Hidden Driveway to use as a calling card to secure further funding for their feature narrative film Bridging, which they have co-written and which Sarah will direct. Bridging, slated to shoot in Summer 2011, will be produced by Federgreen Entertainment (whose latest feature Score: A Hockey Musical opened the Toronto Film Festival this year) and Triptych Media. Bridging has received support from Telefilm and the Harold Greenberg Fund, but requires further funds to make its budget.
As Sarah is crossing over from documentary, Hidden Driveway is meant to get her feet wet in drama before hitting the feature set next summer. Hidden Driveway has a number of similarities to Bridging - both feature young actors, and in both films a lot of the drama takes place while walking. (Visual reference points are Linklater’s Slacker, Before Sunrise, and Before Sunset.) Also, the shoot will allow Sarah to build her collaboration with her cinematographer Sylvaine Dufaux, and editor Caroline Christie, both of whom will be working on Bridging. As well, the short will demonstrate to funders such as Telefilm, Harold Greenberg, and private investors that Sarah and Brad have the filmmaking chops to make Bridging a reality.
