Update #3: Don't Worry! The Map is on its way

Posted on May 25, 2011

To all our wonderful and generous backers-

Thank you so much for your patience in the last few months, several of you have asked for updates on the status of the map recently and I thought I'd post an update to let everyone know. The map is done and we've been working closely with the people at the press to work out the last few kinks to make it looks just the way we want it to. We are a little behind schedule and we are just as anxious as you all must be to have the map in our hands.  We've been learning a lot about print production and it has been slow and frustrating at times but we have confidence that it will look as good as we want it to look. Please be patient with us for a few more weeks!

Thanks again,

Amelia and Jamie

Hi Jamie, Glad to hear about your progress. Tim and I discussed at length the problems associated with trying to transfer the colors as they appear on your monitor to the inks of a printing press. Of course he has had a lot of experience with it. Hang in there unitl you get it just as you want it. Love, Grandpa

We met in the summer of 2007 working for a non-profit research organization in the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem mapping the spread of invasive species. After two summers of following GPS units to random locations we started thinking about ways that we could combine our love of being in the back country and our love of maps with our cartography expertise. We realized that even some of the most popular wilderness areas in Western Montana don’t have up-to-date, user-friendly maps. So we started working. In the spring of 2010 we bought two GPS units, quit our jobs, and started hiking. Jamie’s brother Thomas joined us for most of the summer and between the three of us we created the most accurate data set of the trails in the South Half of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Since the weather turned too cold for data collection, we’ve shifted our focus to all the computer work it takes to create a beautiful and functional outdoor recreation map. We have long lists of places we would like to someday make maps of and hope to eventually make this our full-time work!
