About this project

Have you ever wanted to hike to see Montana's version of the Chinese Wall? Have you ever wondered what the view is like from the top of the Swan Mountains? Have you ever been intimidated by all the lines on topographic maps?

We want to help you, we're a new company in Missoula, Montana and we make user friendly outdoor recreation maps.

Our maps have: -GPS-verified trails -marked trail mileages -shaded relief -1:80,000 scale and 100 foot contours -river mileages on runnable rivers

Our first map is the South Half of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. We spent last summer hiking with GPS units and we've spent the past several months compiling and organizing data into a user friendly map.

We want to print that map in time for the summer recreation season on waterproof, tear-resistant paper. There's a printing company not too far from us in Great Falls Montana that prints great, high quality maps and we hope to raise money to help cover printing costs on their press. It will cost about $5k for our first run of 2500 maps. We heard about Kickstarter and thought it sounded like a fun alternative to a bank loan and a neat way for our community to be involved.

Any money raised beyond our goal will go towards producing our next map- the North Half of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. If all goes as planned we'll be hitting the trails again as soon as the snow is melted!

We met in the summer of 2007 working for a non-profit research organization in the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem mapping the spread of invasive species. After two summers of following GPS units to random locations we started thinking about ways that we could combine our love of being in the back country and our love of maps with our cartography expertise. We realized that even some of the most popular wilderness areas in Western Montana don’t have up-to-date, user-friendly maps. So we started working. In the spring of 2010 we bought two GPS units, quit our jobs, and started hiking. Jamie’s brother Thomas joined us for most of the summer and between the three of us we created the most accurate data set of the trails in the South Half of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Since the weather turned too cold for data collection, we’ve shifted our focus to all the computer work it takes to create a beautiful and functional outdoor recreation map. We have long lists of places we would like to someday make maps of and hope to eventually make this our full-time work!
