We are trying to translate our book, "Midnight in Never Land," into as many languages as possible so we can share it with the world
What is all this about Sharing With The World?
Well, the books that are mentioned in this project already exist. We just need your help sharing them with the world.
My name is Perry Bradford-Wilson, I am the former publisher and co-editor of "Comic Relief Magazine," an author and small press publisher. I have several books in print. My projects are real, tangible, and you can already find a number of them in either paperback or ebook editions on Amazon right now. The current bestseller, co-written with Michael Norris, is "Midnight in Never Land." The all-time bestseller-to-date is a crazy little book called "Big Doin's At The Chinese Baptist Church." There are others, and you can take a look on Amazon if you want to read about them. But here I want to get right to the point:
Thanks to the small-press and self-publishing revolutions that have occured in the last few years, almost anyone can - for zero dollars - get their book published and make it available in both paperback and ebook forms, from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and a host of other services.
So, why does anyone need to start a Kickstarter Project to publish a book?
Well, there is one area in which the Big Six publishers still hold the upper hand; international publishing. An independent author or small press like mine can't afford the thousands of dollars it costs to pay native speakers to translate books into other languages. I want to share our books with the world, but small independent publisher/authors like me need help in affording the translation costs. Books have their best shot at being successful when they can reach international markets (and America always needs more exports!) The biggest bestseller of the last few years, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," was a little-known Swedish book until it was translated into more than a hundred languages and became a worldwide phenomenon.
Which brings us to this Kickstarter Project.
Our first project will be translating our book, "Midnight in Never Land" into Italian: "Mezzanotte nel Isola che non c'è." Why Italian? Well, first, because I already speak a little Italian and can do some of the proofreading myself. Secondly, we have marketing connections in Italy and can hopefully get the novel onto bookstore shelves there. Lastly, Amazon has dedicated distribution in Italy, too. So there is a good chance that an Italian translation can be successful. We will hire native speakers to translate the book, so that the prose will flow naturally and local idioms are used. Then the translated manuscript will be independently proofread by a different native speaker.
Is the book any good?
Well, the feedback we get from readers about the English language edition of "Midnight in Never Land" has been great. Our reviews have been uniformly positive. It is a fantasy and horror novel, crossed with a naval adventure, and has been compared to the work of Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Seth Grahame-Smith, and even Patrick O'Brien. You can check out what people have had to say about the book at Goodreads.com, and read the "Look Inside" preview at Amazon.com to get a feel for the book. The novel has received high marks in the United Kingdom, which bodes well for its reception throughout the rest of Europe.
So where do the pledge funds go?
Your pledges will first be used to pay a native speaker of Italian (and possibly, later, Spanish, French and German) to translate the book. Then I will employ a different native speaker to proofread the translations, so that we get a different perspective on the use of idioms, etc. The new Italian Edition will need to be laid out, formatted, and prepared for print. There will be printing and shipping costs for proofs, and then we will need to market the translation. So these pledges will create jobs!
What if you beat your goal?
If this Kickstarter project raises more than costs of the initial Italian Translation Project of "Midnight in Never Land", then we will proceed to a Spanish translation of the same book ("Medianoche en el País de Nunca Jamás"). If this project raises a lot more than that, then we will proceed - after Spanish - to French ("Minuit dans pays imaginaire") and German ("Mitternacht im Nimmerland") translations. And then we will begin translating some of our other books, including "Big Doin's At The Chinese Baptist Church," "Booksellers To The Savage West," and "Everyday P.O.W."
ALL of the funds raised in this project will be spent on the overall Translation Project. My ultimate goal would be to set up a network of translators and possibly help other independent authors and small publishers share their books with the world.
What's in it for me?
Aside from knowing that you helped share American literature with the world? Well, there are a number of great thank-yous available; Everyone who pledges more than $10 to this project will receive, by e-mail, a digital copy of "Midnight in Never Land" (or one of my other titles, your choice) in English. Other rewards include:
- A digital copy of the translation,"Mezzanotte nel Isola che non c'è," when it is complete (so start brushing up on your Italian)
- A paperback copy of "Big Doin's At The Chinese Baptist Church"
- A paperback copy of "Midnight in Never Land" (in English)
- Your names included in the published "Acknowledgments and Thank You" section of the Italian Translation, "Mezzanotte nel Isola che non c'è,"
- My entire published library in both paperback and digital
- The big one: Two Nights & Dinner In Rome, Italy -
- If you choose to fully fund the translation of a book at $3500 or more, I will pay for two nights lodging in Rome, Italy, and you will be invited to the first promotional event for the Italian Translation, where you will be publicly thanked as the patron who made the translation possible! You will have to come up with the airfare, but once you are there I will pay for two nights at a wonderful Roman pensione, and take you to dinner on the night of the promotional event. If you decide to pledge enough to fully fund the translation of a book and cannot make the trip to Italy, then I will find an equally cool and valuable thank-you reward that will work for you.
Will there be updates about how the project is going?
As the Translation Project proceeds I will e-mail regular updates to all backers. Let me know if you would rather opt-out of these updates.
What format will the digital books be in?
Your choice: pdf, epub or mobi.
What If I Have No Idea How Kickstarter Works?
If you're not familiar with Kickstarter or how it works, here's a brief overview: For the next 30 days, you'll be able to make pledges to help support this project, ranging from $1 to whatever you can afford. For your pledge, you can select one of the reward packages—listed to the right—of equal or lesser value to your pledge. You can always pledge more than the minimum to get a reward if you want. Your credit card or other account will not actually be charged at the time you make your pledge, and you can change your mind right up to the final deadline.
If the final deadline comes and we've reached our goal, then everyone gets charged the amount they pledged at once and we get to work hiring translators and sending out reward items. But if for some reason we don't meet our goal, then the whole thing is called off. No one gets charged, no fees are applied, and everyone just keeps their money. So there's no risk of putting up money and then the translation project never gets off the ground. Of course, if we fail to meet the goal, then no one gets any rewards, either, and I'd like to think many of you would really enjoy these books.
