"The Spirit of Tafari" is a documentary on a young man navigating through a difficult past and redefining his future through his music.
About "The Spirit of Tafari"
The “Spirit of Tafari” is a documentary focused on the life of a young man named Tafari McDade who is a hip hop artist pursuing his dreams and redefining his life at Cincinnati's center for urban arts, Elementz. At the age of 22 Tafari embodies the story of many inner city youth in the various things he has encountered throughout his life by living in urban America. Tafari was raised by a loving single mother and his older sisters. He experienced hardship in his home living with an abusive father figure while not having his biological father present in his life. He saw crime happen regularly in his neighborhood. In his teenage years he ended up making bad decisions which led to him eventually dropping out of high school.
Since that time Tafari has been active in expressing himself through song writing. He writes inspiring and insightful music about his own experiences and street life in Cincinnati’s urban neighborhoods. By Tafari's expressing himself at Elementz he has found his artistic voice, and a supportive community to help him heal through his past and carve a path to a successful future.
This video will be narrated by Auschwitz survivor, Werner Coppel, who came to Elementz to learn about inner city life and the art of documentary film-making. In the process of learning about video, he met and started filming a short documentary about one of the young inner-city artists at Elementz, Tafari McDade. After getting to know Tafari he found similarities to his own story of having to heal from a difficult past and find a supportive community to help him through life.
Who We Are & How this Project Got Started
Elementz is an urban oasis of hope and a catalyst of change for Cincinnati’s inner-city youth. What began as a way to get kids off the streets in 2001 has transformed into a thriving Urban Arts Center that fosters talent, ignites potential and inspires possibilities. Elementz helps build dreams, and brighter futures.
This project had its genesis in the improbable partnership of Elementz and Temple Sholom, a Jewish synagogue in suburban Cincinnati. This partnership brought four adult men from the Temple to Elementz to learn the art of video documentary from Elementz Creative Director, Abdullah Powell and videographer, Ryan Crawford. One of these men, holocaust survivor Werner Coppel, came to every session and shared his own story of resilience and the choices he made as a young man and immigrant to the same neighborhood where Elementz is now located. Across the generations Werner and Tafari connected and in this video, it will be Werner who narrates the story of Tafari.
What Will the Funds be Used For?
This project will be used to fund the cost of video production: cameraman, director and editor for the 15 minute documentary. The film will be directed by Abdullah Powell, produced and edited by Donald Hancock (PBS Cincinnati) with additional filming by Ryan "R.Streetz" Crawford, and Craig Bock. We anticipate completing this documentary by December of 2013.
Along with the documentary we will be compiling Tafari's recorded music to produce an short length album that will be used as the soundtrack for the video. Part of our Kickstarter rewards will include us releasing this EP to you exclusively through our campaign. With regards to Tafari's music, this will be his first finished product so your support will help him accomplish this important milestone on his journey! Listen to Tafari's first single entitled "7 Valleys" below.
What Are Your Plans if the Project is Funded?
Elementz and Temple Sholom plan to host several screenings of "The Spirit of Tafari" upon completion of the documentary at central locations in Cincinnati. These screenings would include presentations by all who played a part in finishing the documentary along with music performances by Tafari. We also intend to use this video as a means of creating community conversation around issues in the urban core and the need for supportive communities like Elementz to exist for todays youth. We also intend to look for ways to submit this documentary in for indie film contests as well as ways to screen the documentary in broader media outlets.
