"Terra Firma", (solid earth in Latin.)
This is a contemporary dance piece about the search for solid ground.
By matching this award we will be able to fulfill the promise of the fellowship by creating a 35-minute piece with six dancers to be premiered at the Baryshnikov Arts Center September 10th, 2010.
“Terra Firma”—the new work – is a contemporary dance piece about the movements of immigrants across vast bodies of water. The work will explore questions of stability on and off the most ancient vehicle of transit—boats--and the people who take them.
As my own Caribbean, African and English ancestry is replete with examples of water migration to the United States, I'm fascinated by the common threads and behaviors that link cultures, not only by those, that people are prompted to leave but by those, where they are often received.
I am collaborating with the Biennale de Venice award winner, Guyanese-American artist Andrew Lyght, to create the sails of this ship, echoing humanity’s ancient and modern voyages.
This is an opportunity to broaden our exposure to New York audiences and meet presenters, agents and potential investors who would like to help us take the next step forward.
