Photo-main

This film explores the effects of the U.S. embargo on both Cubans and Cuban/American exiles, and what it may mean when it's lifted.

WHAT I PLAN TO DO:

THE FIRST THING I plan to do is go back to Cuba to interview several more subjects and shoot more "B roll" video. This will add more depth and insight to the film. I will need to cover the costs of hiring an interviewer, a car and driver (fixer), travel and expenses.

In addition, I plan to interview several Cuban exiles who now live in the United States. I will be documenting how their points of view contrast with the views of the Cubans living in Cuba.

Two of the main questions that I will continue to explore in my interviews with both Cubans living here in the U.S. and Cuban citizens living in Cuba are, "Is there any valid reason for the embargo to continue to exist?" and "What are the continuing effects of the embargo?". Although the questions may seem simple, the answers are much more complicated when one compares what the Cubans in both groups have to say on the subject.

THE SECOND THING I plan to do with the funds is to hire an editor to help finish it off, as well as to build a new-media interactive component. I estimate this cost to be about $4,000.

WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT? I feel that this is a very important film to be made because the "embargo" (or "blockade" as it's called in Cuba) is a misunderstood policy that has had a serious and long-lasting effect on the people of Cuba. Most everyday Americans don't even think about the embargo beyond its effect on their travel and vacation plans. Yet, judging from the responses to the small number of public previews of the work-in-progress, it has become obvious to me that these Americans are not only surprised at how the policy affects those people whose stories I am telling, but agree with me that the entire situation is unfair and unjust.

Yes, helping to end this policy is my goal with this film. While some may say I'm a bit naive. I see the end of the embargo as a win-win situation for both Americans and Cubans. All of my research and interviews, with both the Cuban citizens who long for the end of the embargo, and other Cuban-Americans, some of whom have a very different point of view, have done nothing to change my mind that it is extremely important to end the embargo. My work will show the necessity of allowing the United States to build permanent normal relations with the Cuban people and government and letting change and growth come to Cuba. That will only occur when Americans are able to freely travel to Cuba and trade is normalized.

I have already invested thousands of dollars of my own money and many hours.

I believe in this project.
