We are still proudly beaming from last weekend's SF Son Jarocho Festival. The event held at Brava Theater was a huge success thanks to you and your support. The crowd was filled with Son Jarocho enthusiasts, and music lovers. And each day the energy and relevance of the festival grew as classes and fandangos completed on Sunday.
The festival kick off began with the film “Beyond La Bamba” and a Q&A with film makers Marco Villalobos and Daffodil Atlan. Rounding out the evening was a discussion about instrument making and luthiering with Alfredo “Godo” Herrera, Andres Flores, and Noé Gonzalez.
Saturday the crowd was brought to life by a beautiful performance by Pa' Sumecha and a special energetic set of Jarocho Rock by Quetzal. Saturday was equally exciting as Andres Flores performed with Maestro Cotito on cajon y Los Hijos de Jose. Los Cojolites brought the house down with their amazing set as did Sistema Bomb who at one point had mixed together son jarcho, electronica, reggae, rap, and accordion all into one song. Each evening was hosted by MC Dr. Jose Cuellar (aka Dr. Loco.)
Sunday classes were well attended and planted the seed for a revitalized Son Jarocho movement to grow in the Bay Area.
You can see pictures and videos which will be posted soon from the festival at Babylon's Train. Thanks to Jazmin Morelos for her beautiful photos and to Xaúl Reyes for the video work.
We would like to thank YOU, the Kickstarter Backers who gave us the support that we needed to execute this festival; all of the artists and performers who left their hearts, sweat, and music on the stage for our enjoyment; and our sponsors: Kickstarter Backers, Brava Theater Center, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Latin Percussions, El Tecolote, Radio Jarochelo, ZT Amplifiers, Babylon's Train, KPFA, KPOO, La Bohemia, and Round Whirled Records.
