Commission for a 6-9 minute marimba solo from Dwayne Rice.
I started this project to help contribute new music to the current repertoire of solo music for percussion. In order to do this, I am commissioning a talented composer to write a new marimba solo. The selected composer is New York City based Dwayne Rice, who has written several exciting percussion works for various ensembles around the country.
For more information or to download scores, parts and MP3s of his music, please visit www.dwaynerice.com.
Dwayne and I are very excited to be working with each other again. I premiered Concertino (marimba solo with percussion ensemble) at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention with the 2006 Call-for-Tapes winner Trinity High School showcase concert. Since then, the Texas Christian University Percussion Orchestra commissioned and premiered I Ching, which was subsequently recorded on the Escape Velocity album by TCU. I also had the honor of commissioning and premiering his ensemble piece Septet with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra percussion section in Spring 2009. In addition to his ensemble works, three percussion solos have been composed by Dwayne: Variations and Fantasie in A, both for marimba, and a timpani solo named Baroque Suite.
Here is Texas A&M University - Commerce playing the Septet at their PASIC performance in 2010:
My goal for this project is to inspire new audiences through the commissioning and performance of high-quality music. Dwayne has the unique ability to write appealing music to general music lovers, as well as the educated listener.
Thanks to Erik Johnson and the team at Innovative Percussion! They are donating five copies of Concertino to be used as a reward. While you're reading this, go check out their website and buy a few pairs of their great mallets.
