A trans woman attempts to raise $ for her GRS surgery and examines what it means to be trans as well as male or female bodied.
Synopsis:
Like many transsexuals it is my goal, to one day have gender reassignment surgery to help align my soul and body. As a filmmaker, I have often wondered whether or not it would be possible to use the medium of film to assist in reaching that goal. "Making the Cut" is my attempt to find out. Through various fundraising efforts, interviews and personal experiences I aim to explore not only the financial and social issues facing transgender persons, but also what it means simply to be female/male bodied in our culture.
Goal:
I began working on "Making the Cut" back in 2008. In the course of the project I've gotten to meet some incredible people and learn much about how the health & insurance industry as well as society views transgender individuals. Attempting to raise the approximately $20,000 dollars I need for gender confirmation surgery has been a huge undertaking . Trying to fund a documentary on top of that is even more overwhelming. Your donation will help to fund basic supplies for the film, production expenses and afford travel costs associated with the film for me and a small crew. Your much needed contribution will help me tell my story and share my journey.
Thank you,
Ashley Altadonna

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Me and the "Making the Cut" crew have already logged and shot countless hours of footage, but there is still much work to be done. Issues of gender and transgenderism are constantly changing and evolving with time and political and social forces. There is a lot of research and more investigating do. I look forward to interviewing more individuals on how gender is affecting them personally and socially. However, one of the main challenges with the picture so far has been lack of equipment. Having the right tools for the job is essential. A proper lighting kit, mics and an extra camera will go a long way in helping to properly share these important viewpoints.
On top of all this, I hope to be undergoing my own gender reassignment surgery. The surgery is the catalyst of the film. It will also be a real-life struggle to overcome as I recover and recuperate. I will be on bed rest for nearly a month or more! Unfortunately, providers for GRS are few and far flung. Making sure my crew is able to travel half way across the country with me and properly document my experience is vital. Knowing that I have the financial backing to ensure their travel expenses will be a huge help!
I have screened my other short films, "Whatever Suits You" and "Playing with Gender" in festivals around the world. I will be aggressively attempting to screen "Making the Cut" just as much, if not more so. Any extra funds would help go toward making sure the film is seen by as many people as possible!
