We have received a lot of questions from backers regarding Une Bobine for iPhone 5, so we wanted to post an update to answer them all in one place. Keep reading for answers to the most common questions we've received as well as improvements.
You can view the new Kickstarter project here.
Improvement to Cable Strength:
The new version has been redesigned to use a cable that has been increased from 6mm to 7mm. This 15% increase has made a drastic difference in strength and ease of positioning. We have posted a first-take, unedited positioning video on the project page showing just how easy it is with the new version.
We have added a backstop behind the phone to provide extra stability for the device and prevent movement of the phone from front to back. This even lets it be used with the camera facing straight down with scanner apps.
USB Connector Size:
The USB connector body has been reduced in size to the absolute minimum. This allows it to fit better in USB hubs next to other connectors.
Over-Molded One-Piece Housing
The connector housings are both molded as single pieces with a double overmold process. Instead of molding multiple pieces that are assembled and welded, we mold a single piece of plastic directly over the electronics to stabilize and strengthen the connectors and then mold a second piece of plastic over the first to provide a clean, aesthetic appearance. This eliminates seams and gaps that could break.
New Accessories and Options
When we first designed Une Bobine, we didn't realize how many people would want to utilize it for GPS while driving. We have now created a car kit, which includes a USB car charger and a dash stability clip. The Dash Clip lets you position Une Bobine very securely without movement in nearly any position. Due to the larger cable size, this is not compatible with the existing versions. However, we are offering this as a 3D printed product for the original Une Bobine. Using our Makerbot Replicator 2 printers, we can custom-print a dedicated version in low-quantities without the large expense of building injection molds. You can visit fusechicken.com to purchase the dash clip.
This is the USB extension cable that many of you are using with your original Une Bobine.
By far, the most asked question is if Une Bobine will work with a specific phone case. While the current iPhone 5 attachment easily accommodates most cases by adjusting the height of your connector, this wasn't a possibility in the new version with an integrated lightning connector. The best solution was to introduce our own cases for iPhone 5|C|S that we could guarantee work with Une Bobine. These are crystal-clear hard shell cases that not only protect your iPhone, but also show it off.
Cable Creatures Kit:
As I mentioned, we have a few Makerbot 3D printers that offer a lot of very cool uses. So we've designed a few creatures that can be attached to Une Bobine to turn it into a piece of art on your desk. Because of the enormous complexity of the digital sculpting, these are much harder to make available in both cable sizes. But we are working on a few more that we might have available for the original Une Bobine cable size.
Many of you emailed saying that you did not receive the specific information about what we're doing for existing Kickstarter backers. While we can't offer coupons or discounts through Kickstarter due to their rules, please email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org and I can share some details about what we can do for you.
We have met so many people from this Kickstarter campaign and are thankful for your backing and continued support. We've also met quite a few innovative project creators that we've helped and have helped us along the way. I want to thank two of them in particular. First is Chris from BiteMyApple.co who is one of our backers and now a reseller. He's been instrumental in helping not only us, but many other Kickstarter projects over the last year.
The other I want to let you know about are the EverDock guys, David and Cameron at FŪZ Designs. They've got a very inventive design that is reminiscent of how we utilized the Apple cable for our lightning attachment. But they've taken it to the next level. It is the world's first charging dock designed to work with all smartphones and tablets, including both Apple and Android devices. Machined from a solid block of aluminum, the EverDock is available in Silver, Space gray, or Gold. Using micro-suction technology the EverDock always remains firmly in place and makes a stunning addition to any home or office. With only a few days left, be sure to check out this project before it's over.
