Hello to the 56 wonderful people who have supported the premiere of "Sharks Before Drowning" at Joyce SoHo in New York!

Because of you we are able to cover the costs of traveling to New York to share this work.

We performed last weekend for three wonderful audiences (the public performances) and two "closed" rehearsals that ended up being opportunities for us to show the work to professionals in the field who have been interested in seeing my work for some time but haven't been able to see it live.

"Sharks Before Drowning" is a treasured piece in my repertory. It represents some of the deepest progress made with my cherished ensemble (Kristina Fluty, Ben Law and Jessie Marasa) and was viewed internally and externally as something of a departure or an assertive progression in the "Stamina of Curiosity" series.

The piece ends with the four of us heading toward the audience, lip-syncing the words to Whitney Houston's "My Love is Your Love." When we made the piece in 2010 Whitney was still alive, and the song floated in that surreal conceptual space where kitsch and poignancy intersect. Since her death--by drowning--the song and its themes have a different kind of resonance for us and for the audiences who witnessed "Sharks" in New York. For me, the end of "Sharks" asks but doesn't answer a question: what's next? And in the moments of swaying gently as the lights fade I always ponder the strange alchemy of unspoken connection that happens in performance, most especially when I can get out of the way of my own perceptions about value and power and allow the ongoing mystery of moment-by-moment living to rise to the surface and, for even just a few moments, be a point of connection between strangers.

I thank you for your support, and look forward to sharing "what's next."

With gratitude,

Molly
