A man is plagued by haunting dreams that force him to journey through his subconscious to discover and conquer the root of his fears.
First off let me say, THANK YOU! Thanks so much for everyone who supported this film with their donation and helped it reach the campaign goal in just over a week! Holy cow, I'm so happy and so impressed.
Moving forward- Just because Oculus has reached it's campaign goal, doesn't mean you can't keep giving. All the awesome rewards still stand as they are and the campaign will be open until January 1st at midnight!
When I chose $1,500 as a goal, I lowballed on purpose for a few reasons. One, I gave the campaign a very short time. I wanted it to stay relevant and exist during the production of the film. Secondly, it was very important for me to get enough to cover all the production costs, regardless of how much went towards post-production (everything that happens after the film is shot).
What this means- The more that is given towards Oculus, the higher the quality of distribution will be... i.e. Better quality DVDs, cool jackets for the disc casing, Blue-Ray discs for those who are interested, and so on. ALSO, each donation will be put towards film festival entree costs. The more Oculus can apply for, the more chances it has to get recognized!
Lastly, please visit the Facebook Page for Oculus. Give it a "LIKE" and check out all the cool updates on how the film production is going!
What is Oculus?
Oculus is an independent short film I am shooting for my thesis project during my senior at Ithaca College. It's cumulative effort of four-years of cinema production studies and will be the capstone film of my college career. Inspired heavily by the imaginative short stories of Jorge Luis Borges, Oculus explores the blurred boundary between dreams and reality, questioning the sub-conscious origins of our actions. I am super excited to be able to tell this story and film it with the skills and experience I've gained over the course of my education.
The story revolves around a writer named Everett. One day Everett's life is thrown into turmoil after he accidentally discovers a violent and strange object on his walk home from work that was clearly meant to be hidden. Unsure what to do, he's overcome with anxiety and is pitted into a state of paranoia and superstition. When his dreams and fantasies start to invade his daily life, his friend and lover Carolyn notices and helps him come to understanding. It becomes clear that Everett must delve into his sub-conscious to find and conquer the root of his fears.
Why a Kickstarter campaign?
Making a film a lot of fun but also a huge undertaking. As student filmmakers, we shoot movies on a very tight budget and in the very short time of a school semester. One of the the major parts of the movie-making process is raising funds for your budget, and what's better than being able to offer rewards to backers in trade for their support? Kickstarter allows for a really cool opportunity for filmmakers to interact with individuals interested in seeing creative projects come to life.
Oculus is being shot entirely by a student cast and crew with almost entirely borrowed gear. Nevertheless, there are many costs that come with the process of creating a film.
We are shooting over the course of 6 days. While the cast and crew are volunteering their time, and not getting paid, you still have to feed everyone for each meal they are on set for. Fed crew = happy crew = good creative energy!
Costumes and props make up another large portion of the budget. Everett's dreams are wild and full of strange things. Creating a interesting visual world requires controlling the entire environment that enters the frame of the camera.
Although I am shooting on my own camera and using equipment from my school, there is gear that we still must purchase or rent. Things like hardrives, SD cards, camera equipment (i.e. lenses and filters), a slate, extension cords, lighting gels, batteries and so on, all add up very quickly and are very necessary to the success of the film!
The final but equally important cost of filmmaking is what happens after the film is completed. My goal for Oculus is to submit it to film festivals to get it noticed and recognized by my colleagues and peers. Festival entree fees and media storage for screenings are expensive, costing around $30-$50 per submission, even in student categories.
Anything you can contribute will help us turn an awesome story into an amazing film and help an aspiring filmmaker enter the professional world for the first time. Please check out the cool rewards and remember that if we don't reach our goal, you'll be refunded your pledge!
