A historical performance featuring traditional African drumming and dance with the soul and rhythm of hip-hop and its urban ingenuity.
DiaTribe: From the Village to the Streets, demonstrates the powerful connection between African traditions and the newer forms of dance and music popularized by today's young African Americans. The legendary Obo Addy will be joined by well-known Portland artists Mic Crenshaw and Alan Wone to present a history of African music and dance from its traditional roots to urban dance music.
The word diatribe is a noun which means "a bitter, sharply abusive denunciation, attack, or criticism". An ongoing diatribe is one of the perceptions and image concepts between Africans and African Americans. With such a distance spanning the continents, culture and connection are two gaps that have been widened over generations. One cultural connection that hasn't suffered is the evolution of African rhythm and its ancestral presence within the foundation of hip-hop.
This stage performance is not only a theatrical production but the conceptualization of a cultural movement honoring the musical and oratory symphony of traditional rhythms in music and dance.
OUR GOAL
DiaTribe has been sponsored in part by The Collins Foundation and The Oregon Cultural Trust but we need an additional "kick" to start the DiaTribe movement. We'd like to invite you to join our family in making this performance possible and launching it into the world.
We want all of you to have access to the performance and that means outputting the filmed event to DVD/Blu-Ray. Every donation (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will go directly to the pre- and post-production costs of DiaTribe: From The Village To The Street. Your generous donation will help us cover the following:
- output of the performance to Blu-Ray/DVD
- publicity materials
- theater rental expenses
It's as simple as that. Diatribe is an informative, educational and culturally rich experience for all ages to enjoy. We hope that this campaign will have an outcome we all can be proud of. Looking forward to your support and involvement in "DiaTribe: From The Village To The Streets".
