The Arts & Culture working group is trying to create an army of giant puppets for NYC's Halloween Parade and for marches&rallies beyond
*UPDATE* LESS THAN 24 HOURS TO GO TO REACH OUR $2000 GOAL!!! WE ARE ONLY $511 AWAY!!
Due to the overwhelming support we are now raising our goal to $2000! We want to start an NYC Puppet Nerve Center that can help puppeteers at other occupations build their own puppets! Imagine a nationwide flowering of spectacle puppet theater joyously spreading a new public consciousness!!
Greetings from Liberty Square!
I am part of the Arts & Culture working group at Occupy Wall Street, and we have begun plans for some puppets for the halloween parade (and marches/parades afterwards) as part of OccupyHalloween. The puppets we are trying to make include a giant bull puppet that will battle Lady Liberty (Who has already been built), a horde of corporate vampires, and a 40 foot long Chinese dragon style Brooklyn Bridge puppet with puppet protestors on the top of it.
Our biggest need right now is some studio space to build these puppets, so if you know of anywhere in manhattan or not too far away in Brooklyn that would be willing to donate studio & storage space, that would be the most important thing to let me know about (just message me).
The original budget stood around $1790 for these puppets (with free labor from nyc puppet artists), but Halloween is coming up so we have shortened our fundraising goal to $500 in 1 week. It's ambitious, and we didn't want to risk not getting any of the money by shooting for more than that. So by all means help us get to $500, but if we can push beyond that it will help a lot!
If we raise enough money, we may be able to rent studio space for this project.
Depending on the amount we raise, we are also looking to invest in equipment to document the process and communicate how to build large puppets to other occupations around the country.
Also, we are looking for donations of the following materials:
1) rods (lightweight long broom handles with screw tops are great, but
1" or bigger dowels that are 4 feet or longer. also long bamboo pieces
2) Paint (lemme know what you have lying around!
3) Burlap -does anyone know how I can get this cheap/free? It serves
many purposes but it's $6 a yard and I kind of need a bilion yards
4) Rope and twine
5) Glue -especially hot glue (lots and lots of hot glue) also contact
cement and spray adhesive -alll kinds of glue really)
6) fabric (lemme know what you have lying around
7) foam (lemme know what kinds you have)
8) Labor -if you want to build email me at thehappysec...@gmail.com
9) Transportation -need big cars or vans to help transport these
puppets on oct 31st
What do you think, can we raise $500 in 5 days? Is there enough support for Giant Puppets to help spread the message of Occupy Wall Street with Joy and Spectacle? We'll see on Sunday night...
Thank you! Thank you!
