WE WOMEN WARRIORS follows native women caught in the crossfire of Colombia's warfare who use nonviolent resistance defend their people.
Since 2000, more than $8 billion in U.S. military aid has gone to Colombia to fight the war on drugs. In that time 3.3 million people were internally displaced by warfare, and Colombia is still the world’s leading cocaine producer.
WE NEED WOMEN'S VOICES TO CHANGE THE TIDE OF CONFLICT IN COLOMBIA.
"We women are warriors, not with weapons, but with our thoughts and through raising our children.”
-- Flor Ilva Trochez, Nasa tribal leader in Jambaló, Colombia
Using my hard-earned access as a journalist, I spent 2006 to 2009 in northern & southern Colombia following three remarkable native women – Doris, Ludis, & Flor Ilva – who are caught in the crossfire of longstanding warfare financed by the drug trade.
I spent another three years editing, and now I need your support to help complete the final post-production of this independent documentary feature film.
ABOUT THE FILM
We Women Warriors bears witness to a neglected human rights crisis and interweaves character-driven stories about female empowerment, unshakable courage and faith in the survival of indigenous culture. This film urges policy makers and the public to consider these facts:
- Since 2000, more than $8 billion in U.S. military aid has gone to Colombia
- With more than five million people forced off their land, Colombia is home to the world's greatest displacement crisis
- Women and youth are among those most vulnerable
- Colombia has 102 indigenous groups, one-third of which are in danger of extinction because of the ongoing internal conflict
There is another way to LEAD, and women show us the way.
MEET THE PROTAGONISTS
We Women Warriors shows that despite being trapped in a protracted predicament financed by the drug trade, indigenous women are resourcefully leading and creating transformation imbued with hope.
Doris is a young mother who puts her life on the line to protect the vulnerable Awá population, whose livelihood depends on high-stakes production of coca leaves (the base for cocaine).
Ludis, a spunky Kankuamo widow, who is imprisoned on false charges of rebellion, shows a mother's determination to make her way back to her children and form a collective of women coping with systematic killings that ravaged their community.
Flor Ilva is the first woman entrusted to lead the Nasa tribal government, who spearheads a peaceful movement to dismantle police barracks that endanger civilians by placing them in the line of fire.
Your participation in this project ensures that the stories of Doris, Ludis and Flor Ilva will reach other women and audiences worldwide.
No gesture of support is too small to join in this collaborative effort.
