Safos Dance Theatre is an emerging dance company in Tucson, AZ that creates modern dance unique to the U.S.-Mexico borderland experience.
As a young company, we are committed to creating contemporary artistic forms that reflect the common experiences of our diverse community. We are excited about our goal of making modern dance and the performing arts accessible to all. For the past five months, we have been hard at work on our upcoming production, "Vignettes" a site specific performance of dance, poetry and music and we are excited to share it with you! About the performance:
"Vignettes" will be Safos Dance Theatre’s fourth dance concert. Safos is a dance company that works collaboratively with artists from different genres to merge dance with other art forms. Safos’ value of collaboration and fusion is reflected in our latest production. This year, Safos’ choreographers teamed up with our company composer, Jordane Lafitte, and guest writers from throughout the region to create six new original site specific and site adaptive works of art. The concert will feature dances about the following topics, banning of text books, relationships, loss of a loved one, love, and joy. Each piece is a collaboration between a choreographer, a writer and a composer and some of the dances will integrate visual art. The concert will also feature a piece by award winning performance artist Denise Uyehara who collaborated with Safos artists on her latest project titled “Bus Stop Dreaming.”
What your donation will help us do:

- 1) purchase the materials needed for us to construct our own mobile stage for this site-specific performance

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Some of the risks that come with working in a non-traditional performance space are what makes this season’s performance of “Vignettes” so unique. Risks are minimal. One uncontrollable risk is the weather. Since we will be performing outside the only option, in case of bad weather, is to push the performance back to a later date. The House of Neighborly Service has agreed that this option is open if the inevitable happens. Another risk factor we are considering is the production quality. Since this is our first performance in this venue, we are considering all available areas on the property and creating site specific work accordingly to match the capability of electrical outlets, lighting structures, and other important necessities to create the most aesthetically appealing and comfortable setting for the audience members. Our greatest risk is the inability to build a stage which would force the performance of certain pieces into a small dance room that only has the capacity for 55 people, dropping our audience size drastically and impairing our impact on the community of South Tucson by allowing less community members to discover and enjoy our work.
