I am a harm reductionist and a community gardener. I worked in the field of harm reduction (harmreduction.org) for 6 years. I volunteered and worked at needle exchanges, working with injection drug users, and at HIPS (hips.org) working with sex workers. At HIPS I ran the outreach program for 3 years and always dreamed of having a garden connected to the program--to bring the safe space of the organization outdoors, to have a healing/growing space, and to have nutritious food for all the organization's programs. My first problem was I had no idea how to garden. My second problem was I had no time or resources. Since I left HIPS I've become a total garden nerd--and it has changed my life. It all started at the Washington Youth Garden (washingtonyouthgarden.org) where I volunteer and learned most everything garden related that I know and at a community garden where I work a plot. One day it occurred to me that now I have the know how, and could probably get the resources, to get not only my dream garden but many like it growing.
