Deep Girl is back! Ariel Bordeaux's ground-breaking minicomic is being collected in a single 100+ page volume.
What is Deep Girl?
The mid-nineties were a golden age for zines. During these years thousands of handmade publications were printed and traded across the country. One of those pioneering titles was Deep Girl by Ariel Bordeaux. In a time when female cartoonists were rare, Ariel's voice was unique. Deep Girl was unflinchingly autobiographical and packed with energy and humor. Ariel's approach to subjects like body image, self-esteem, and sex offered a form of feminism that was genuine and relevant. And Deep Girl was deep--Ariel wrote about her life, but she also wrote about her thoughts.
What Are We Doing?
Robyn Chapman (publisher and proprietor, Paper Rocket Minicomics) is working with Ariel to collect all five issues of Deep Girl into a 100+ page single volume. The Collected Deep Girl will include comics, photographs, ephemera, an interview, and an essay. We are aiming at self-publishing 500 copies (more if funds permit). Each book will have a screen printed cover (hand printed by Robyn). Interiors will be primarily black and white, with a full color insert.
What Do We Need?
Deep Girl has been out of print for over a decade. We need your help to bring it back. Our goal of $1000 will cover the cost of publishing 500 copies. The pockets of Paper Rocket Minicomics are not deep. One way or another, we'll see this project through. Help us do it without breaking the bank.
(Much thanks to Harris Smith and Robin Enrico for helping us put together the Kickstarter video.)

At this point, all the pages have been scanned. What remains is the hard work of putting the book together. A lot of research and writing will go into the back matter. Each cover must be hand printed. The book needs to be designed. Over the years Robyn has successfully published comic anthologies that are challenging and hand-crafted (see Hey 4-Eyes! and Make). She's got what it takes to see this through.
