Update #6: Final Update!
Hello!
As you all know, Pop-Hop is now open, as a real physical actual store, and we are about to celebrate that fact, grandly, with readings, performances, screenprinting, music and general merriment. We hope to see as many of you as possible this Sunday, and those of you in far flung places will certainly be in our thoughts. Thanks again for helping us get this thing going. We couldn't'a done it without you.
Much love,
Sarah & Robey
PS- There are still a handful of backer rewards which we haven't quite gotten down to the post office with yet. But don't worry, we haven't forgotten you. Keep an eye on your mail box. It'll be full of Pop-Hop goodies soon!
Update #5: Benefit Bonanza
Hello!
We here at Pop-Hop Central have been busy printing and preparing to send out our backer benefits (almost on schedule), and we hope you will soon be elated to find our goods in your mailboxes.
For our lovely supporters who live in the Los Angeles area, we'd like to offer you the opportunity to pick up your rewards in person.....and get a special preview of the shop while you are at it! We can't wait to show it to you, now that the construction dust is starting to settle (not quite on schedule). To arrange a pick up time, please email us at pop@thepophop.com.
Cheers,
Sarah & Robey
Update #4: The Big Build
Greetings Friends of Pop-Hop!
We are pleased to announce that we are finally in the space at 5002 York Blvd and ready to begin turning our shop dreams and plans into a physical reality.
-

-
With the help of our friends Sandy de Lissovoy, and the guys at the Knowhow Shop, we have begun creating bookcases and wall shelves to carry the bounty of books we have waiting to line them.
-

-
The print studio planning is still in its infancy, but we've kicked out a shiny lot of Pop-Hop buttons which will make their way into our backers mailboxes over the course of the next month.
-

-
We've also started blogging at http://thepop-hop.com/. Follow our progress there, and of course, we will also continue posting to all our loyal fans on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/thePopHop.
There is still much to do, build, plan and program, and we welcome your feedback. Pop-Hop Books & Curio will be a community-driven space, and as such, we encourage your involvement. Share a skill, pitch an idea, or just drop us a line to say Hi, anytime, at pop@thepophop.com.
And thank you, as always, for making all of this possible.
Yours,
Sarah & Robey

Update #3: Thank you!
We made our goal!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all our supporters for helping us in our mission to transform Pop-Hop Books & Curio from a dream into reality. Go team Pop-Hop! We have been so touched by all of your acts of generosity and words of support. The encouragement we have received is beyond what we could have imagined.
Lately there have been some grim sentiments going around about the future of bookstores, but we say Pfft to all that. What makes a bookstore great is its community, and ours has come out kicking! With the momentum of your support we are going to create an amazing place to celebrate books!
Stay tuned to thepophop.com for updates on our progress. In the meantime, we hope you all have a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Cheerful Kwanza, Joyeux Noël, Feliz Navidad, Beatific Festivus, Blithe Solstice, Exultant Christmakkah, Ecstatic Etc….
Peace and love,
Sarah & Robey

Update #2: Give the Gift of Giving
Greetings Friends of Pop-Hop!
Now that there are only 5 (FIVE!) more shopping days until Christmas and 5 (FIVE!) more days left in the Pop-Hop Start-up Fundraiser, we thought, HEY, why not combine the two. Give the gift of giving! When you give to Pop-Hop in the name of a friend or family member, your gift dollars do double duty. And not only are you giving to Pop-Hop, you're also giving to the community of book lovers who will benefit from having this amazing creative venue in their lives. AND this gift will later turn into an actual physical gift that we will send your friend/brother/mother/cousin/co-worker/loved one in the mail. Give the gift of gifts!
We've added a bevy of new donor benefits, at various levels, and most of them are one-of-a-kind selections from our collection of books and curios, so grab them now before your friend/brother/mother/cousin/co-worker/loved one does. We will continue to add new items as the week progresses, so check back. That perfect used book or curio might pop up at any time!
Such as…..
New Year's Card $27
These were printed in December 2009 at the amazing Team 8 Press under the supervision of Spencer Hansen. Although they were hobbled together with spare ink, they're real crowd pleasers. Robey recently unearthed a stash of extras, so here they are. These greeting cards are blank inside, measure 4 x 5.5 inches, and come with a taupe A-2 envelope.

Other Voices, Other Rooms by Truman Capote $38
Capote began writing Other Voices, Other Rooms after being inspired by a walk in the woods. It emerged as his first novel in 1948 with a controversial boudoir shot of the author on the rear cover. This classic 70s Signet pocket edition is sized so that you can take it back to where its inspiration began. Go for a walk with Other Voices, Other Rooms in your pocket and who knows what you may be inspired to write!

Fish 'n Skillet Salt 'n Pepper Shakers $86
A little fish on a little skillet that you can fill with a little salt and a little pepper...in theory. The stoppers on the back have gone missing and by a little bit of salt, I mean about 2 or three servings, so the practicality of these chachkas is up for debate. But who cares, these guys are totes adorns!
The 21 Balloons by William Pène du Bois $57
This 1947 Newbery Award winner is a discard from the Fairfield School Library. It may interest readers that the story strongly resemblances that of a 1922 F. Scott Fitzgerald story, "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz." Du Bois acknowledged this and said, "the fact that F. Scott and I would spend our billion in like ways right down to being dumped from bed into a bathtub is, quite frankly, beyond my explanation." Perhaps they both also liked whiskey.

I BET I CAN pint glass. $42
Oh, Yeah? Prove it!

Snow White by Donald Barthelme $64
Another pocket edition from the 70s. Sarah has been collecting editions of this book for a decade. She thinks she might be ready to part with this one. If you know her, and you know Barthelme, you'll grab this post modern classic up quick!

Sanrio Fancy Friends letter holder $183
Sanrio! Yay! Fancy Friends! Yay! This little guy is a lion that you can use to hold your letters. We think. Although this particular one was once used to hold chalk. It's got a few chips, but it's still has a sparkling presence. Believe it or not, we can't find another example of this on the Internet. If you can, holla. Until then we'll assume it's a rare and priceless item.
Souffles, Quiches, Mousses and the Random Egg by George Bradshaw $212
Bradshaw was a famous short story writer back when short stories were prized by readers and magazines actually paid for them. The prose of his recipes is as elegant as the type face on the cover. "The perfect lunch takes place out of doors on a fine day under a shady tree. This is what you should have: a Cheese Souffle, a salad of young greens, fresh strawberries, and homemade brownies." 1st Edition.

Vintage Tuffy Truck $260
This is a toy truck from the '60s labeled as a Tuffy Truck. It still looks mighty fine, chipped paint and all. We would guess this thing has seen about as much playtime as any toy could offer, and it's time we put her out to pasture, i.e. on a highly visible shelf where your kids can't touch it.

Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez $385
CoaDF makes a great gift for that family member who loves books that involve labyrinthine knife play. This also happens to be a near mint condition first edition of arguably the best novella of the 1980s. It is priced accordingly.

Super Surfer Skateboard from the '60s $444
This is the original mass-produced skateboard. The decal is missing and there's a couple of holes where someone might have tried to put on a different back truck(?), but otherwise it's solid and beautiful. The wheels are red clay and very lightly worn. Both the wheels and and trucks are in great shape.
Happy Shopping!
Remember, Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing fundraising method. We must reach our $10,000 goal by Christmas Eve in order to receive any of the funds. Thanks!

Writer Sarah Balcomb and designer Robey Clark are the partners behind Pop-Hop Books & Curio, a creative retail environment merging a bookstore and print studio, opening Spring 2012 in the Highland Park neighborhood of northeast Los Angeles.
Sarah Balcomb was born in New York, grew up elsewhere, and received her MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University. Her short fiction has appeared in dozens of literary magazines, she has worked at major art museums and small literary nonprofits, and has taught creative writing in public high schools and at the university level. Her first job, at the age of 15, was at an independent bookstore. She is excited to further develop her love of the printed word within her community of Highland Park.
Robey Clark grew up in Richmond, VA, and studied graphic design at RISD. He has been publishing music and printed matter under the moniker Pop-Hop since 2007. He managed the design lab at the Bronx Museum of Art and has taught screen printing at art institutions on both coasts. He likes reading books almost as much as he likes making them.
