About this project

Cucalorus needs your help! In spite of a very successful local campaign with support from 75 businesses, we fell short of our sponsorship goal by $17,000. So we're looking to you, our friends, to make a donation to Cucalorus. Roughly $7,000 of your donation will be used to rent projection equipment to enable us to maintain high technical standards needed to exhibit the best independent films. More than half of the donations will go directly to filmmakers. Each year Cucalorus provides more than $30,000 (equivalent to over 50% of ticket income) in direct financial support to artists participating in the festival. We hope you will join us in cultivating film culture in Southeastern North Carolina by becoming a backer of our Kickstarter fundraising campaign. It's easy, pick your rewards (passes to the festival!) and become a backer today.

The Cucalorus Film Festival brings people together to celebrate, discover and create independent films. This year’s 17th annual festival will be held November 10-13 in Wilmington, North Carolina. A total of 120 international and independent documentary, narrative, and short films will screen to an audience of 10,000 rambunctious artists and cinephiles. More than 200 filmmakers and artists (dancers, musicians, spoken word poets, comedians and at least one mime) will be on hand to share their work. In addition to traditional festival screenings, Cucalorus includes a hefty selection of offbeat offerings, like Dance-a-lorus, Blue Velvet the Musical, Visual Soundwalls, and a retrospective survey showcasing Norwood Cheek.

This kickstarter project funds the Cucalorus financial support program for attending filmmakers. Through the Kickstarter project (and with matching funds from sponsors and donors) attending filmmakers will receive travel support, free hotel accommodations and enough cash to stay fed and fueled for the festival. Cucalorus draws on 16 years of experience in bring innovative artists together for creative exchange. The non-competative festival provides an opportunity for filmmakers to relax, network, and socialize. The November retreat is best known for it's spirited social scene - packed with artists and lots of moonshine.

  • Cucalorus takes place in historic downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. All festival events are within walking distance of each other, helping ward off movie-butt syndrome. Wilmington is home to EUE Screen Gems studios, an unruly lot of indie filmmakers, and a thriving, progressive arts community.

  • Cucalorus say: competition sucks. It often takes hundreds of people to make a film, so why does one guy get the little statue? Ideas shouldn't be owned by people, and people shouldn't be singled out and ordered in a hierarchy. In order to create an open environment, where ideas are exchanged freely, Cucalorus avoids the competitive tension prevalent at other fests. Laid back and low down rule the day in Cucaloria.

The Cucalorus Film Festival was established in 1994 when a small group of filmmakers held an intimate one-night event in downtown Wilmington, NC and has since grown into one of the largest regional film festivals in the country. From its inception Cucalous did not give awards, preferring the more relaxed atmosphere of a non-competitive, artist-centered event. MovieMaker Magazine dubbed Cucalorus as one of the “25 Coolest Film Festivals” in 2010 and the Brooks Institute named Cucalorus one of the “Top Ten Film Festivals in the United States” in 2009.
