About this project

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

We’re taking a different approach in the depiction of Africa’s past, present and future – we’re taking a deeply personal approach, and that’s why we’re here reaching out to our friends and fans to help create a unique documentary film entitled Africa and the World that is designed to give American and international audiences fresh insight into Africa. Produced by Tukufu Zuberi, and co-Produced by Julie Dash.

After years of research and travel our feature length documentary film project AFRICA AND THE WORLD is nearing completion. I’ve journeyed across continental Africa with my film crew, having unprecedented access to surviving history makers. We have footage on heads of state, revolutionaries, scholars and the ordinary African people.

Simply put, we want to get the film completed.  It is a film with a universal message of hope and self-belief, taking place in Africa.  We think it is a story that will inspire those who see it.

Through the lens of four watershed events AFRICA AND THE WORLD will focus on the causes and the effects shaping its recent history: World War Two, the end of colonialism, the Cold War, and new global interconnections.

In one segment we highlight how Africans were essential in the Allied victory over Nazism. We watch the World War arrived in Europe in 1939, the French army immediately summoned some half a million African men to colors. In the Métropole we visit the area were 75,000 Senegalese infantry could be found on the eve of the German invasion of France. And, towards the end of the war, we see some 20,000 West African infantry fighting in the invasion of Southern France, ultimately liberating the city of Belfort in eastern France in November 1944.

As we journey across the continent we’re reminded that AFRICA AND THE WORLD is about possibilities as well as problems.

Africa is shaped as much by what happens in America, Europe, Russia and China as it is by events within its own geographic borders. This is a documentary that can also help us to understand how much the rest of the world continues to be shaped by events in Africa.

A Message from Julie

We are collaborating on an amazing documentary about Africa entitled Africa and the World. More precisely, the story will capture the condition of Africa today based on it's recent history, current events, and scholarly investigations.

We have been working hard to get funding the traditional way by going to major production companies, however the content of the film doesn't seem to fit comfortably or neatly into their clean slate story lines. Tukufu and I then realized that we are not making this film for production companies, we are making this film for the people.  For anyone that cares about the people and events of the world's largest and more resourceful continent.  You can make this film a reality.

Peace & Blessings,

Julie Dash

A Message from Tukufu

The journey to create Africa and the World began several years ago when I interviewed my father about our family history just prior to his death. The discovery that his grandfather came from “somewhere in Africa” (my father didn’t know where) fueled my desire to understand on a deeper and more personal level the continent I have studied most of academic life. Blending a personal quest with a scholarly vision and understanding, I hope to place the people and events of modern Africa within their full historical and social context.

We need you to be a part of the small group that will enable us to make this game-changing film.

Peace,

Tukufu
