We have our first $1000 backer!!!

Update #4 · Dec 3, 2011 · comment

Hello,

How exciting, we have our first $1000 backer and new Associate Producer. Even though we only have three days to go, this gives me hope. I also have more important good news. I have just spoken with someone who has committed to pledging the final $3000 if we can make it to $12,000. So, please help us spread the word and expand our much needed support of this important documentary story. Please also keep in mind that if you have already made a pledge, it is possible to increase your support before our deadline on December 6. Once again, thank you for your support and all your efforts to help us make this film.

Clarifying a possible misunderstanding.

Update #3 · Nov 23, 2011 · comment

Hello supporters of Hakela "The Last One." I just wanted to take a moment to clear up a possible misunderstanding. The goal of our Kickstarter campaign is to raise funding for the documentary, Hakela "The Last One", specifically for an essential production trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in late December and early January. The funds will be used directly for the production; travel, lodging, and hiring of crew, renting production equipment, and for editing a new work in progress sample with the new footage. The funds will not be used for Calvin's legal costs, or other related expenses he will incur in his quest to regain legal administrative trusteeship of the Spotted Elk name. If you have any questions please email me.

Nov. 16 Tribal Court Ruling!

Update #1 · Nov 21, 2011 · 1 comment

On Wed. Nov. 16th there was a tribal court proceeding on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation hearing Calvin's case to reverse the original court order which wrongfully granted trusteeship of the Spotted Elk name to another tribal member, whom Calvin contends is not a blood descendant of Chief Spotted Elk. This individual attempted to have Calvin's case dismissed on technical grounds.  The good news is that although the Tribal Judge did not reverse the original court order, she also refused to dismiss Calvin's case, and instead ordered a continuance and set a new court date for mid January. This is one of the  events we need to film.

In addition, during the traditional Big Foot Memorial Ride, which retraces on horseback the final journey of Chief Spotted Elk and his band before the massacre at Wounded Knee at the end of December, there will a special ceremony honoring Calvin, and acknowledging him as the great-g-g-grandson of Chief Spotted Elk. It is essential that we are also there to film this historic event. Calvin will be there. Your pledges and additional pledges will go towards travel and lodging expenses for the film crew for a ten day production trip, hiring of additional crew members, and for editing a new work in progress sample that will then be used to reapply for completion funding from several sources such as Native American Telecommunications, ITVS (PBS), and National Geographic.
