Update #11: The 11th Update

Posted on November 21, 2010

Hi everyone,

1+1= the eleventh project update. And it hasn't come at a better time!
We have just completed an amazing 13 city+ tour through the US and Europe.
Next/ now is Africa!

Working with the Sandbox-network (www.sandbox-network.com) to organize the tour was perfect. The networks, students, and movers we have met have made a wonderful contribution to our growing conversation about Africa. Being able to discuss the issues we experienced and recorded in our documentary has proven itself to be worthy of all the time and energy we have put into it. As filmmakers experiencing different audience reactions is key to the growth of our work.

The way we showed the documentary was a process as important as the one we went through making it. After each screening we had a participatory style of dialogue called Open Space Technology (http://www.openspaceworld.org/). If you haven't heard of it it could change the way you conduct meetings and conferences as it actually taps into the energy and perspective that everyone has in a way that isn't forced or too much like a boring classroom.

Update #8: Print it.

Posted on August 11, 2010

Guess what? The Africa, unsung heroes "1+1=11" DVD is finally on its way! It has been a process of blood, sweat and tears to get it done, but for the love of our backers it should be winging its way to you very soon. The team have already left again on the next trip "In search of unsung camel cheese" so we have left your rewards in the careful hands of our support team back in Hong Kong.

We hope that you enjoy the film and that it provokes thought and discussion about aid, how it works, how it doesn't, who does it and why.

Be in touch and stay heroic. Peace Out.

Love,
Alicia Sully, Sebastian Lindstrom, Evan Fowler, Jennifer Wong, Hiro Yumoto, Matt Glenn, Jessica Sherrell, Caroline Briggert, Chris Wilson

Update #7: What is Taking So Long?

Posted on June 5, 2010

Greetings & Salutations,

Its been one month since we released the first cut!

We screened the 72 minute documentary "1+1=11" in Somaliland to a local audience. Their work experience was in educational development and with their expertise, provided some valuable feedback and fruitful discussions.

People were viscerally drawn to the music and moving pictures. They were also fascinated by the trip itself and the different characters we featured.

The main issues we have been working on is the introduction and the ending of the documentary. We have also been working on subtitles, mixing sound, and color correcting. Other than that the show is ready to go!

After two more weeks of finalizing in Hong Kong we will mail you the final copy, some with the accompanied book and map.

Thank you for your patience,

Working & working,
Alicia
and team

I am a co-founder of the What Took You So Long Foundation. I've been shooting and editing in over 20 African countries, crossed Asia, shooting at the Emirati camel beauty contests and sleeping on too many floors to count, even some beds and one pool table.

Before this nomadic lifestyle I was living as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a village in Ghana without electricity or running water for 2 years working with wonderful and largely illiterate people.

I studied cinematography in the Czech Republic and filmmaking at SUNY Purchase where I am also the founder of "The Cheese Club" which I miss fondly.
