An intimate performance and video installation taking audiences on a wild ride of religious ecstasy and spiritual transformation.
In traditional mythology, the Chapel Perilous is a place of transformation. You cannot exit the Chapel as the same person who entered. It is a place that strips away the layers of this world to reveal the spiritual cord that binds us to the divine. Our ‘Chapel Perilous’ invites a single audience member to experience an intense, theatrically engineered communication with the divine. Mixing tongue-in-cheek depictions of spiritual ceremony and excess with dynamic sonic and visual evocations of religious ecstasy, our ‘Chapel’ is a multifaceted performance installation using video projections, a wild, multi-layered sound design, and three performers manipulating puppets, objects, and their own bodies in striking tableau based on religious themes.
The short performance will touch on holy-rollers, bacchanalian orgies, martyrs burned as heretics, wince-worthy church propaganda, all contained within a bejeweled, carnivalesque, spinning chapel structure that functions as both a screen for the shadow of mysteries, and a window to the other world. Blasted by holy fire, whirling with dervishes, speaking in tongues, the individual within the chapel will ride an intoxicating, surreal roller coaster of images and sounds to consider the emotion and powerful urge for divine connection. We need your help to purchase materials for our set and objects, and to fund our amazing designers to build the experience! 'Chapel Perilous' premiers in Atlanta, GA in October, 2012, and will tour nationwide in 2013!
