Thirteen dancers try to work out existence through extreme exhaustion and subversion of time. The Tank. April 6th & 7th 2012.
Subject Matter is created with thirteen dancers regarding the nature of matter and mattering. The piece will be presented at The Tank April 6-7, 2012. Addressing material/immaterial existence through trauma imposed on the self and others, the performers shift through a variety of obsessive improvisations and patterns: biting, scratching, bleeding, gnawing, tearing, writhing, and wildly inflicting sharp objects, while simultaneously seeking a quiet plane of time.
Most crucially, the funds are needed to reasonably and honorably value each artist for their incredible work. There are no production costs. Money is needed to simply pay each artist an honest wage for their work. The project needs to raise a lot of money by March 10th. Paying the artists for their labor is monumentally important to this project. I hope you will agree and donate towards ethically valuing artists. Help us out.
The piece has been in process since 2009 when Emily decided to directly address her questions of existence through her history with love and violence. The work has collected many dancers and collaborators. She has shown parts of it consistently in New York throughout its development. This spring she will get the opportunity to show it in its entirety. What is the nature of matter and mattering or who do you love and how do you love them and what does that look like and what does that feel like and what does that smell like and what does that have to do with anything at all and why did you hurt them like that and where did your hostility go and who made your heart die like sour fruit and what do you miss and where are we and what are we made of and what are we made of inside of that and how will you fail and why did you force it and who cares there is no room to grieve and i'm worse at what i do best and for this gift i feel blessed and where can you lie down it's time to lie down well i guess everything dies baby that's a fact but maybe everything that dies some day comes back so put your makeup on and put your hair up pretty and the green grass grows all around all around the green grass grows all around and mother mother make my bed come make it soft and narrow since jimmy died for me today i shall die for him tomorrow and yes yes yes i said yes and what are you made of and who do you love and how do you love them.
