Hayti: The Legacy of Black America is a four-part educational film series designed to work with project based learning.

WHO ARE WE?
WHY ARE WE THE WAY WE ARE?
If we want our children to know their history, we have to teach them ourselves. If we want our story told accurately, we have to tell it ourselves.

Our Mission
The purpose of this film is to create a historical reference that can be used as a educational resource in after school programs; computer based lab studies; Saturday academies and summer youth enrichment programs.
Current generations will participate in project based learning and digital multimedia to
preserve relevant historic information. We will use comparisons "then and now" to financial
literacy and 'then and now" entrepreneurial studies.
n the early twentieth century,
The Legacy of "Black Wall Street"
Parrish Street in Durham, North Carolina, was a national symbol of Black progress. The Black Financial district in Durham four blocks of economic power located in predominately White, downtown Durham. It was known as “Black Wall Street” . Hayti, Durham’s primary African-American residential district, was the core of Black life in Durham.
Over 200 Black-owned and operated business existed in Durham’s black business district. W.E.B. DuBois, upon visiting Durham in the early 1900’s, reflected in his writings on the uniquely tolerant relationship between Blacks and Whites. Some of the richest Blacks in America at the time, lived in Durham. There are valuable lessons to be learned from their experiences, for the benefit of generations to come.
In an effort to define The Legacy of Black America, we chose as a model, the Black Durham Experience in the city’s first 100 years. With the help of local historians, oral histories and historic archives, we are hard at work creating what we hope will serve as an educational reference and social cultural history resource. This is not just kicking up the dirt where a community once stood. Our film is about the historic upbuilding of this remarkable community, the destruction and the spirit of Hayti that lives on today.

How Do We Plan To Produce a 4-Hr. Documentary on a $50K Budget?
Over the past 2 ½ years we have researched and analyzed all aspects of this project. We have collectively contributed over 1000 hours to the concept, development and pre-production phase.
We received a small grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council to create dialogue and solicit feedback from the community. We received considerable encouragement for our efforts. It was evident by the outpouring of positive feedback that people recognized the need to document this important history. We incorporated many of their suggestions into subsequent revisions.
In keeping with the concept of being the “guardians of our own history”. we will be true to history in the telling of our own story through our own eyes. We are committed to investing the time required to achieve a quality production.
