"Dog people" Earl and Pearl Barker try to help a monarch butterfly overcome its fear of heights so that it can migrate to Mexico.
We're Cindy and Kirby Pringle, a husband-and-wife photography team and the owners of Dogtown Artworks. We're trying to raise funds to print our third children's book, "The Butterfly That Would Not Fly."
As full-time artists, the past two years have been challenging. Our main source of income is participating in art fairs in the Midwest. Sales of artwork — by all artists — have suffered. People, understandably, have other priorities with what little disposable income they have.
"The Butterfly That Would Not Fly" is finished. In fact, we have the files at the printer. We would like to raise $6,000 to help cover the printing costs for 2,500 copies of the book. That isn't the entire amount, but it's a big chunk of it. If we don't raise the $6,000 through Kickstarter, we'll have to use much our savings and/or credit cards — which we are hesitant to do with the economy still very fragile.
We have an excellent track record with our books. We printed 4,500 copies of our first book, "Happy Tails: Earl and Pearl on the Farm," an ABC book, and are down to 300 copies. We printed 1,500 copies of our second book, "Happy Tails: The Call of Nature," and have 40 books remaining.
Ordinarily, the sales of the two books, along with sales of our "dog people" photographs and note cards, would be enough to finance the third book. But we've used that money to help us survive and pay bills the last two years. "The Butterfly That Would Not Fly" will be sold through our Etsy Store, eBay, at art fairs and through Amazon. Our previous books were also sold through bookstores nationwide by a distributor. We have elected not to go through a distributor this time around for two reasons: there are few bookstores left to distribute to and we sold out of the first printing of our first book by selling it ourselves.
