When you cross illegally into the US you risk your life. Why do they do it? Why do they take that risk? The answers may surprise You.
The purpose of my project
Crossing into the United States without papers is one of the most dangerous things in the world to do. Gone are the days of easy entry. When you cross today your life is in danger. Why do people take such a risk? Just why do they do it?
The answers might surprise you. I never really gave it much thought until I became personally involved and then met people first hand who have been through it. After spending five years in Mexico I have come across many, many people who have risked their life to do just that, in addition to learning about a culture that is much different than ours, and let me tell you, it gives you a different perspective than just reading about it in a news story.
The Unwanted will be a full length documentary exploring the personal stories of people that have been through this and the deportation process. It will explore the Mexican culture, how it is different than ours, and how that plays into the situation. It will give the viewers a clearer perspective of the complexity of the situation. With first hand interviews filmed in both the U.S. and Mexico it is my goal to tell this story outside the normal preconceptions and bias, from one viewpoint or the other, that you might normally see in dealing with such a delicate issue.
Is “The Unwanted” pro or anti illegal immigration?
Acording to Vocabulary.com “a documentary is a film or video examining an event or person based on facts... emphasizing or expressing things as perceived without distortion of personal feelings, insertion of fictional matter, or interpretation.”
And while I have been told by others that it is impossible to do that 100%, that is my objective. To clearly present the facts, reasons, experiences, and outcomes, and then let you decide how to assimilate them. The only preconceived idea here is - that most everyone does not know the entire story. The Unwanted is Pro “the entire story” and anti “knee jerk reaction” from either side of this problem.
Is there room today for impartiality?
That remains to be seen, and that is why I am turning to you. Are people just looking for something that substantiates their viewpoint? Or can we look at a situation that may be more complicated than we would like it to be, and look at it objectively? I don’t know the answer to that question. I just know in my heart that this film needs to be made.
I felt it was important to budget this project as frugal as possible, yet have enough resources to get the story right. The money we would like to raise from the community will cover:
- Kickstarter and Amazon Fees.
- Cost of fulfilling the rewards.
- Film crew and production cost in Mexico
- Travel in Mexico
- Post production including editing and sound mixing.
I tried my best to develop rewards that would show my appreciation for your help while not taking away too many resources that could go towards making the film the best it could be.
Your card will not be charged until July 11 and that is only if we are fully funded. A heartfelt Thank You to everyone that can help us to tell these stories.
