The Priority Boxes project is a public art series that has traveled the globe seeking to initiate dialogue on peace through art.
The Boxes
The Priority Boxes project was born in 2006 during a routine trip to the post office. I had recently begun painting the outside of boxes in which I shipped my sold works of art, when a postal worker noticed the abstract designs on my packaging and said, "You know, your boxes are also like works of art."
I remember returning to my studio that day struck by the observation and intrigued by the power art has to interrupt a person's daily routine. I immediately began thinking of a way to explore that unexpected encounter.
We always expect something of value to come in a box, but what if the box was empty yet containing something symbolic with a positive, challenging or inspiring message.
It was at that moment that I decided to start an experiment in an effort to provoke thought and ask people to reconsider their ability to influence change. I wanted to create dialogue, so I started sending seemingly empty boxes to anyone who requested one, anywhere in the world - for free. I decided to send the boxes without charging a penny for the work or shipping, to convey the message that something of such priority as peace should not have a price. And that art can be both inclusive and accessible.
My experiment has grown into a cultural movement with over 9000 boxes sent around the globe, to recipients in countries in every continent. It has also been been used by art educators as a teaching tool in several classrooms in the U.S.
The project keeps growing and the requests keep coming. With your support, the project can continue to spread its message of peace, love and art.
Where the Money will Go
The project is self-funded with help from donations. Due to the costs involved, there is currently a 6 month waiting list for domestic boxes and up to a year wait for international boxes.
The money raised will go toward getting the waiting boxes out and help to fund the project for another year. Donations will cover shipping and supply costs, including postage, boxes, paper, ink and rolls of tape.
