The Itching is a short claymation about a wolf's attempt to confront her neurotic obsessions. A joyful and creepy adult fairy-tale.
What is The Itching?
We're making a 12-minute clay animation called The Itching, a dark, funny fairy tale about a shy, neurotic wolf (Faye) who develops a mysterious itch on her thigh as she tries to befriend a group of extroverted, freewheeling bunnies.
The idea behind this project really came about because of our interest not just in storytelling but in claymation in particular, in wondering how possible it was in clay-- for instance in working with the animals' faces-- to express a very particular psychology and set of emotions for each character that the audience might relate to, beyond what might be typically seen.
What's the story?
Faye is an intense, shy wolf- a vegetarian in a polka-dot dress- who lives by herself in the forest, amidst magazine foldouts of Saturn and the pyramids. Faye's buttons are pushed when she accepts an invitation to a party from a popular female bunny named Chloe. While Faye is almost always alone in her room, the bunnies live the cliquish, hedonistic lives of rock stars or young Hollywood players, lounging on velvet couches and doing shots.
At the party, Faye tries to mingle but feels very out of place and suddenly starts to feel very itchy, especially on her leg. As the story continues, Faye tries not to itch-- but the more she tries not to, the more she can't resist-- and the once small mark on her leg turns into a distressing, soupy infection. Chloe tries to help Faye remedy the situation, but when nothing works, Faye retreats into further isolation, and her anxiety and obsession mount, lodging her in a questionable mental state... as her leg infection turns equally whacked.
Will Faye wrestle her itching into submission?
Or... will the itching push her over the edge?
Dianne is the writer, director, primary designer, and maker of animals. Adam is the sole animator and primary builder of props and sets, as well as character armatures. Dianne and Adam do the camera work together.
Lots of friends have donated their time and creative talents to the project (in Brooklyn, Providence, and Portland, OR!) by helping us design and sew costumes, paint and build props, and co-produce behind the scenes (borrowing or lending equipment, letting us work in their basements, helping us write grants, etc). Ryder McNair composed the music that plays at the bunnies' party.
Where will the funds go?
So far, we've been working on The Itching for roughly two years. In that time, we've received huge support from our friends, families, and fellow artists, and also received a grant for pre-production and development. Due to all that support, we've been able to make the clip you see above, but now we're doing more fundraising.
We would use these Kickstarter funds to hire two additional animators to assist us over the rest of this year as we finish the movie. Raising money through Kickstarter will allow us to finish The Itching in about a year (vs. much, much longer without more funding).
What are the rewards?
In exchange for your support, we offer several different rewards (listed over at the right), and our incredible gratitude. We plan to finish the project at the end of 2011, and send out DVDs and other items at the head of 2012.
What will happen once the project's finished?
We love that animation is a form that so many different people enjoy, and this piece will be available free online at some point in the future. Alongside that, we'll submit to festivals, art galleries, museums, clubs, schools, etc.
Outside of the Kickstarter campaign, The Itching trailer has already been seen by many people, and we've been extremely excited and encouraged by their reaction. We want to share The Itching with as many people as possible, and we're, um, itching to start animating again... but we need your help! Thank you for being here!
Yours, with great respect, gratitude, and appreciation-
So long for now-
Dianne and Adam
