Dear "Pig" Backers,
Henry and I are back from our trek to San Francisco's WonderCon, where The Man made his SF debut and where Henry participated on a very popular panel called, "What's New In Indie Sci-Fi," moderated by fellow sci-fi filmmaker DJ Bad Vegan. We debuted a new trailer of "Pig" and Henry discussed the ways that working outside of the Hollywood system allowed us the opportunity to explore new ideas and play with narrative conventions. The Man, replete with his customary (and dare I say, smart-looking) orange Hawaiian shirt, black slacks, plastic ties, and black hood, "assumed the position" throughout the convention hall and out front, as attendees gawked, took pictures, shot video, and posed with our Hero. There's just something irresistible about a Man in a hood! We designed a four-page mini-Comic Book and placed it in front of The Man, with folks grabbing copies and reading them. At a place as busy and as distracting as WonderCon, with studios and other deep-pocketed companies spending tons of money to get fans' attention, our little guerilla marketing stunt more than held its own. The Man will be on the streets of Nashville and London drumming up interest for our screenings there very shortly.
Speaking of those festivals, we are busting our tails to finish the film in time to premiere, as all the final pieces are coming together feverishly. Composers Alexander Burke and Nick Fevola are putting the finishing touches on the score. Post Sound Supervisor Jeff Shiffman is designing and editing sound effects and prepping our sound tracks to be mixed by Sound Mixer Carlos Sanches this weekend. Online Editor and Colorist Adrian Vallis is cutting in effects shots being delivered by Visual Effects artist Jeff Orgill, and then putting his magic touch on the footage to make it look its best. Graphic Designer Coy Poage is designing posters and postcards that we'll take with us to the festivals to spread all over town. These generous and talented folks all have faith in the film, and frankly you, and are working for deferred pay to get "Pig" finished in time. Much of the money we raise here will cover their salaries.
In each of these Backer Updates I will highlight a reward we are giving away. Today I want spotlight our $50 Level, perhaps our best value. In addition to getting your name in the end credits of the film, up on the big screen for everyone to see, you also receive all three of Henry Barrial's feature films. Some Body, his first feature, has a star-crossed history, and has become a kind of lost indie classic. The first digitally shot and projected feature to premiere at Sundance, it played to sold-out audiences, critical acclaim, (see some of the press quotes below), and was picked up for distribution by Lot 47 Films, one of the leading indie distributors of the day. While it was released theatrically all over the country in 2002 and also played on The Independent Film Channel, Lot 47 ran into financial difficulties and pretty much closed its doors, with the principals leaving the company's assets to an investor who has sat on them ever since. The film was never released on home video, is not available on Netflix, and hasn't been seen since its last showing on IFC, eight years ago. True Love, also not yet available on video, suffered from only one thing. After playing in several film festivals in 2008, Henry and I put it on the shelf temporarily while we set out to make "Pig." These films are now available for viewing, along with a signed copy of our comic book and a digital poster, for the bargain price of $50. Interested? You can always upgrade your gift, or better yet, get a friend or loved-one to become a Backer at $50 and borrow the DVD's from them!
As always, we are incredibly grateful for all of your support. Please continue to spread the word as we hit the halfway point in our campaign. I can feel the momentum building as we finally finish the film in preparation for its first public screening. It's incredibly exciting for us, and we hope for you too, as you become a part of this journey with us.
