Nick Satinover is a Midwest artist heading to CA to create new screenprints & lithographs about experiences of travel, space & place.
Hi, my name is Nick Satinover and I am an artist and educator from Dayton, Ohio and I am about to undertake a 2,300 mile journey to make prints.
This may sound crazy and you may be asking yourself; "why travel somewhere so far away just to make some pictures?" The answer is both practical and conceptual. As an artist I am interested in place and space and how experience and memory of these subjects translates into two-dimensional images. A space becomes a place when it acquires a story or a narrative. Traveling to a new location allows for me to wipe the slate clean, to be immersed in a new space and try to make sense of it enough for it to become a place. Also, pragmatically, I do not have the facilities or tools in my home studio or teaching institution.
I have been awarded a residency period of one month at the Kala Art Institute, in Berkeley, CA which will allow me facilities and time to complete a sizable body of new work unencumbered by a 9 to 5 job or teaching load.
As a printmaker I am interested in the ability for images to travel, multiply and disseminate. Prints are traditionally more affordable than non-repeatable forms of art and they have a unique artistic and commercial tradition and their own context within contemporary visual culture and visual arts. I would like to use my funding to make prints which will be given away to my backers. I do not intend to profit form this venture. My only desire is to make this new body of work and get it out there. You--the backers--are essentially putting a down payment on limited edition, fine art prints which will make their way to you in September after I return to the Midwest.
You can see many examples of my artwork on my website, nicksatinover.com. You can read examples of my writing at http://methodsofbeing.com/ (issues #5 and 6) and in the Journal of the Mid America Print Council Vol 18, page 14.
