SYNOPSIS

Losing a bet to older friends, eight year-old Eloy steals a coin from an antiquities store.

From that day forward he tosses the coin whenever faced with a decision, basing his choices on heads or tails. Over time Eloy adds more support tools to struggle through life, relying more heavily on various forms of prognostication and augury.

As a young man, Eloy follows his secret love, the shopkeeper’s granddaughter, Soleil.

Relying on divination again, he constructs a letter for her with messages received in the fortune cookies he orders ritualistically every morning with his coffee.

Things come to a head when Eloy finds himself facing an emotional decision which he once again leaves up to a toss of the coin, which may finally expose him to the uncertainty of life and love.

WRITER AND DIRECTOR NOTES

The development and production of this short film project was a natural result of experience gathered over years of creating documentaries, commercials and music videos; disparate works but all rich in narrative and stylistic elements.

The objective is to develop a strong story for presentation to a wide audience in both regional and international film festivals. High end production value is mandatory for this project which brings together a network of passionate filmmakers to make it happen.

The storyline for this short film emerged through a personal exploration of universal tropes surrounding faith, notions of destiny and the idea of a deterministic universe.

Our main character’s mode of living began as an innocent childhood game but through repetition and reinforcement grew to become a disability, with all choices dependent upon his personal talisman, the coin.

His overpowering need for a sense of safety and control is diametrically opposite to the way his object of affection approaches fate; while he attempts to limit his exposure to fate’s caprice she allows it to wash over her and carry her away with it.

The underlying themes range from fated lovers to self-fulfilling prophecy and determinism, with conclusions ultimately being left to the audience.

By limiting his exposure to chance, our anti-hero by necessity limits his exposure to society and isolates himself. Yet he may find himself stripped of his psychological and spiritual shelter by the very device he’s used to remain “safe”.
