In the Fall of 2011, the Madera Wind Quintet held a Call for Scores in a search for new, innovative works for wind quintet. We received over 130 entries, and selected five incredible pieces to perform on our Spring 2012 concert program and to record. Our album, a collection of world premiere recordings, is named after the first movement of Philip Wharton's Quintet, "Five at Play". The longest work on the album, Wharton's piece is in five movements and explores simplistic themes of childhood and play in a highly sophisticated and colorful way. Carl Schimmel's primitivist and exciting Towns of Wind and Wood is a tone poem in nine continuous movements, each named for a different "town" as inspired by Anne Carson's poem "The Life of Towns."
We also have Daniel Nass's fun short piece called Scherzophrenia; Peter Nickol's Ultramarine, a plodding meditation on the ocean depths featuring the bass clarinet and English horn; and Sean Friar's Short Winds - an instant favorite with funk licks and timbral effects that sound like no wind quintet you've ever heard before! These works combine with a commissioned work written for us by Sarah Summar, To Neinilli's Mischief, a post-minimalist work about the Navajo god of water and incorporating Navajo songs. Madera Wind Quintet: Five at Play showcases some of the best new works for wind quintet, extending the repertoire into unexpected and thrilling territory.
Five at Play will be recorded at the newly renovated Voertman Hall at the University of North Texas by Greg Dixon of Dixon Sound Services. We are excited to be releasing the album digitally and on CD through Crescent Phase, a new label based out of Utah that focuses on newly composed solo and chamber music. The CD artwork will be designed by Kate Yoder.
Your donation will be used for recording, mixing, mastering, and other production costs for Five at Play. Remember, every little bit counts, and if we don't reach our goal, you will not be charged.
