Adrian has been invited to perform Spoken Word at the Havana International Poetry Festival. Help him get there!
I'm going to begin this by telling you a true story that happened in 1971. Many of you that know me, know that my family in Chile were political prisoners for their support of Presidente Allende. What you may not have heard about was that as an infant, I was held by Fidel Castro. Yup. Fidel Castro.
See my grandmother was the matriarch of the family and when Fidel came to visit my hometown in Iquique, she gathered her children to go see him speak at the old Casa Deportista in Iquique, Chile. As Fidel finished a speech where he talked about the promise of the revolution in Chile, my grandmother lifted me up and offered me to him.
If folks ever wonder where my bent for supporting social causes and marginalized communities came from, I like to tell them it was from experiences like this. I've worked for over twenty-five years as a writer, performer, educator and activist.
This year through my work with Paul Flores and Sol Sound Havana: Spoken Word Hemisphere, I was invited to participate in the Havana's International Poetry Festival. Help me make this dream a reality. Please help me fund my trip and bring Spoken Word to Havana.
