A Bold New Lamp That's Stylish And Fun!

Imagine a flower with a paper-thin rectangular head. A hole has been cut out of the center which is also angular in shape. Supporting its weight is a spindly stem that has grown out of a flower pot. Like a bizarre love child between a flower vase and 80’s sci-fi movie, this blossom lights up with a cool neon glow.

The Original Lamp Concept
The Original Lamp Concept

That is the description of a lamp I built a decade ago after discovering a new lighting material called electroluminescence. 10 years and too many life events for a single person later, that lamp kept reemerging in my mind. Assuming someone had probably come up with a similar design, I decided to do some serious research on the lighting industry. What I discovered was underwhelming... The lighting design industry in the U.S. had not changed much in the last century, never mind the last decade.

Instead of being discouraged I was ecstatic; a stagnant industry means a great opportunity to shake things up!  Inspired by the untapped possibilities I quickly created dozens of designs, all based on my original concept.  After narrowing the designs to just a few, I successfully built the first prototype with the help of Nextfab Studio, a design and manufacturing facility here in Philadelphia.

Now armed with a working prototype, I wanted to get my lamp onto the shelves of stores so the public would have a real alternative to the boring light bulb and lamp shade combo that’s been around for generations. But how? Manufacturing a consumer product, no matter how simple, costs real money. I’m not independently wealthy, so where would I get the startup funding?

The answer of course is Kickstarter. So here I am, ready to make you an elegant, manufactured version of “The Square Tulip.” And your help gives me the chance to change the face of lighting design.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

During the prototyping process I discovered that the electroluminescence material is too blue, too dim, and it makes an annoying high pitched whine. Not a consumer friendly product. After some research and experimentation, I came across a technique of combining super bright LED’s with etched clear acrylic. With this method I could still create a square thin light panel, now with the brightness and warm color needed for a consumer lamp.

This solution was not without its problems. With the prototype the etched panels and electronics were simply cemented together. But since the panels are transparent I couldn’t hide the glue stains. So what’s my proposed solution? To cast the electronics in with the acrylic as one solid panel. Testing this has begun and I'll keep an updated progress report here on Kickstarter.

Another issue is keeping the overall cost of manufacturing down. Each mold will cost around five thousand dollars to make, and I currently need to fabricate three independent molds for production. So that’s thousands before a single lamp is made. However, once the molds are created, each part will be relatively cheap to produce.

I built the prototype with the help of the staff at Nextfab studio, where I also plan to complete this project. With Nextfab’s engineers, designers and machinists guiding me through the manufacturing stage I will deliver a fully functional consumer grade product.

FAQ

  • We haven't had any overseas shipping options simply because the lamps are too big (3.5 feet long) to ship to some countries. As shipping to the UK is much cheaper than say Japan. However, I've been looking for a possible solution so stay tuned...
