"Marc Huestis Presents THRILLPEDDLERS production of MARAT/SADE" - an outrageous thrilling take on a revolutionary theatrical classic!
This Kickstarter campaign is to pay for the extra cost of producing
"Marc Huestis Presents THRILLPEDDLERS production of MARAT/SADE" - running July 13- 29, 2012 at SF's Brava Theater for 15 thrilling performances.
The good news is that a major portion of the budget has been raised! With a cast of 25 in a larger venue this is a figure with little wiggle room. The show is now writhing with color & creativity and is expanding beyond our wildest expectations. So instead of fretting, we're asking for a little help from our friends.
With our collective vision comes cost. Significant $$ been added for creative costuming, wiggy wigs, set materials, promotion etc. More good news- we've already raised over the goal of $4,500 on Kickstarter thusfar. Of course we'd like to raise even more- raising the bar of the production to even greater heights. Wouldn't THAT be spectacular!
We excited to announce that amongst our collaborators is award-winning costume designer Beaver Bauer. Her recent designs dazzled at ACT's wildly popular TALES OF THE CITY and amazed at Theatro Zinzanni's tents . She is 'family”, a visionary & a treasure- as these fantastical ideas in early illustrations (not final) clearly demonstrate. Just think how fab the final costumes will be!
This will make the production sparkle & also allow for bringing on such additional talents as Daniel Nicoletta (photographer) and Bill Selby (graphic designer extraordinaire).
It's super exhilarating to be bringing together the talents of old friends & new. Beaver, Daniel & I go back to the heady days of the 70's and the Angels of Light Theatre. And this show offers a larger stage for the new keepers of this legacy- SF's most innovative & entertaining theatrical troupes THRILLPEDDLERS (recent recipients of 6 Bay Area Critics Awards), featuring the talents of Russell Blackwood (director) & Scrumbly Koldewyn (musical director).
So instead of looking back to the "good old days" of SF's alternative theatre, I ask that you help kick things forward with this production of MARAT/SADE
Thoughts on MARAT/SADE
Almost fifty years ago, when Peter Weiss' Tony-winning play and theatrical event premiered, voices demanded change. Today with the Occupy & other worldwide revolutionary movements, once again the streets are alive with youth questioning authority. Marat/Sade captures the politics of these exciting moments by harkening back to another tumultuous period- the French Revolution. The dialectics of personal & political change are seen through the eyes of its two protagonists: the infamous Marquis de Sade, after whom sadism is named, and a proponent of pleasure; and Jean-Paul Marat, the clarion voice of the people - now awaiting assassination in his bathtub at the hands of the steel willed Charlotte Corday. With its bloody depiction of class struggle and human suffering, hope and disillusionment, Marat/Sade is a slyly humorous feast for the mind and eye and once again outrageously relevant.
Thrillpeddlers brings a unique new take on this classic and in a shameless wink to history, our show opens on July 13- the day of Jean Paul Marat's assassination, and one day before Bastille Day.
So help take a stand for liberté, égalité, fraternité (helped along with a little blood, a dash of general copulation, some singing & dancing and a final kick(starter).)
ANY AMOUNT YOU CAN GIVE will be HUGELY appreciated!!!
