We aim to make an 8bit football game called Super Goal Run.
What is Super Goal Run?
Super Goal Run will be an 8bit, side-scrolling football game for PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Super Goal Run is inspired by the 8bit era of computer games and some famous 8bit-style football games.
The game it-self will be split into two parts. An RPG-style career sub-game and a first-person action sub-game.
In the career sub-game you will take part in contract negotiations, respond to transfer offers and develop your skill-set through training and challenge mini-games.
In the first-person action sub-game you will play in matches where your aim will be to score as many goals as possible, defend your goal, win the ball back when you lose it and successfully complete tricks.
How well you play in matches will affect your career. In addition how well you plan your career will affect your performances in matches. Things like getting a new contract, being transferred to a better team, winning promotion or silverware all hinge on good choices inside and outside of matches.
We also plan to have a five tier league system in the game world, where you start off as an amateur and work your way up to the top league, before going on to play in continental and world championships for your country of choice.
The Match - In the match defenders will run towards you from right to left along three tracks. You can see the tracks marked below for demonstration purposes and the defender in red approaching along track 2. You will have different options available to you to get past defenders. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks.
One approach you will be able to use is to simply avoid them! Although you will first have to time when you change to a different track. Too early and the defender will have time to adjust and change to the same track as you. Too late and you will be caught by a tackle. Another drawback is that you will not gain any points or rewards from avoiding a defender.
Another approach will be to beat the defender. Below is an example of one trick you will be able to execute in the game. If done successfully you will get past the defender, collect a reward and earn points. While also staying on the same track.
There will be many more tricks in the game. Not all of them you will recognise from real football as this is a game and we can dispense with limitations like gravity and physics :)
In the image below you can see white lines indicating possible ways to beat that defender. Moving the ball past the defenders left, right or straight through the legs are possible options. You will also be able to chip the ball over the defender. Each defender will have a graphic indicating their preferred foot and the number of points you could earn from beating them. The defender in the image below favours his left foot and is worth 8 points.
Each player in the game will have a unique trick. When you play as that player you will be able to use that trick.
You will also be able to call on a team-mate to help you past a defender. As you can see in the image below timing will be important to succesfully execute this one-two.
Once past the defenders you will have a chance to shoot at goal. Your chances of scoring will increase if you are in a track that suits your players favoured foot.
Below is some of the artwork that was the original inspiration for Super Goal Run. We still plan to incorporate this angled view into the game for special match events. These special match events would have a time limit within which you must make your decision. We think this will provide a nice contrast to the running and beating defenders part of the match.
In the image below you could be the defender or goalkeeper looking to block the shot or the attacker looking to find the right angle to shoot the ball into the goal.
In the image below you could be the defender trying to make the last gasp tackle or the attacker trying to find the angle for a shot at goal.
Did we mention there would be fouls in the game! :) We thought we would include the image below in the kickstarter to show how much emotion you can get in 8bit artwork. And emotion creates engagement and a much deeper game. So if you want to see images like this in Super Goal Run, back us :)
Where are we in the games development?
We have actually begun development in what is called pre-production, where we try implementing early versions of various parts of the game. In fact the video is using in-game footage from what we have so far.
We have a high level design for the game so we know how the game will play and what we want in it. We also know how both the career side of the game will interact with the action side of it.
That said, we want to make a game that people will want to play and feel apart off, so we will definitely be flexible ( where we can, we do have to finish the game at some point :) ) and respond to feedback.
We believe that a community is probably the single most important part of a successful game. Kickstarter provides a fantastic community platform where we can engage with you, the backer, right from the start.
We have an exciting concept for Super Goal Run, but we cannot make it happen without your help. Building a game is much the same as any other software project, requiring time and the application of a range of technical skills. In order to turn this exciting concept into a proper game we need your support to fund 6 months of full-time development.
What we need?
Animations - this will be probably the biggest thing we will need. Everything in the game from players to fans to board room members will need to be animated. Each player will need a unique trick animation as well as general animations such as run, jump, head the ball and slide. Also players who will be defenders in the game will need to have various tackle animations as well as reaction animations for when they get beaten by a trick and when they tackle another player successfully.
Art - In addition to animations we will need art for every other part of the game. Each screen in the game will need a background drawn for it. Each feature will require artwork whether it be static characters, buttons or menus. The game will have a distinctive 8bit art style which we will have to reproduce to a high quality.
Coding - in addition to writing code to support all the animations we will also need to support 3 ( hopefully 4! ) platforms from the very start. All features of the game will be need to be written from scratch as well as the game framework to house these features.
What will we spend the money on?

These templates will cover hairstyle, face shape, skin colour, body shape, height etc. There are two reasons we are doing this. One is we cannot do detailed character sketches of 148 people in 8bits and keep our reward tiers affordable. We have been thinking a bit about having stretch goals and even went as far as drawing up a list of things we would really like to add to the game. But after reading up on experiences backers have had on other Kickstarter projects we have decided against stretch goals at this time.
But we won't just sit around with any extra funds!!!
Should you back us over the amount we are asking for we would like to concentrate on improving what we have set out to make. Our Kickstarter campaign is very simple. We want to make Super Goal Run. For PC, Mac, iOS and Android. In 6 months. Rather than expand the scope we will use the funds to improve the end product by spending it on extra resources that will in turn allow us to produce an even higher quality game while also sticking to our 6 month development plan.
Who are we?
We are Super Rock Games, a small indie games studio based in sunny London in the UK. We are passionate about games and big football fans. We formed specifically to make football games with the belief that there are simply not enough good football games out there.
Our first game, “The Football Playbook”, was successfully released on iOS earlier this year and featured in the “The Sun”, one of the UK’s biggest national newspapers. It is also scheduled to be ported to Android, PC and Mac.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
This is an exciting project for us but as with all software projects there are risks.
Our toughest challenge with this project will be animating all the different players and their tricks to the quality we will be happy with.
But we feel that with our previous experience in having already successfully developed and released a game (The Football Playbook) that we are in a good position to use this experience to successfully complete this project on time.
Although the game itself is a new concept we will be building the game upon a code-base that has already been tried and tested on our previous game. This stable foundation will help us focus early-on on the new elements that need more time to be built and refined.
